Final Jeopardy: 20th Century World Leaders (10-3-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/3/2017) in the category “20th Century World Leaders” was:

He said, “never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another”

5x champ Austin Rogers boldly went stratospheric with 2 bets yesterday, increasing his winnings from $123,100 to $188,700 in one game! Let’s see if he tops that extraordinary feat in his 6th game, as he takes on these two players: Ryan Hughey, from Indianapolis, IN; and Amy Servat, from Houston, TX.

Round 1 Categories: Litera-Church – Silent-Letter Vocabulary – Occupations – Mellow Fellows – TV – Psychic Jeopardy!

Austin found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Silent-Letter” under the $800 clue, with 10 clues to go after it. He was in second place with $3,000, $400 less than Amy’s lead. He went with a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

The song entitled “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”, for example. show

Austin finished in the lead with $7,600. Amy was second with $5,400 and Ryan was last with $2,200.

Round 2 Categories: National Geographic’s Must See Places for 2017 – Before & After – “Old” Movies – Is That a Thing? – Mars – Venus

Austin found the first Daily Double in the “National Geographic” category under the $1,200 clue on the 16th pick. He was in second place with $12,400 at this point, $1,400 less than Amy’s lead. He bet $6,400 and he was RIGHT.

After touching down at Inchon International Airport, this city that’s kinetic, buzzed and up all night. show

Austin found the last Daily Double in “Venus” under the $1,600 clue, with 7 clues left after it. In the lead with $22,400, he had $5,000 more than Amy in second place. He bet $5,400 and he was RIGHT.

Venus’ mortal lovers include this proverbially handsome human man. show

Austin finished in the lead with $35,000. Amy was next with $18,600 and Ryan was out of the game at negative $200.

Only ONE of two left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.

WHO IS NELSON MANDELA?

Nelson Mandela said the words in the clue near the end of his May 10, 1994 inaugural address, after being elected President of South Africa. You can hear that part at 8.08 in the above video. NPR has a great page about the same speech and its importance. It’s great because it also includes the speech Mandela gave 30 years earlier when he was on trial for sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the state. It is a very powerful contrast of where he was in 1964 to where he was in 1994.

Amy thought it was Winston Churchill. She bet and lost it all.

Austin got it right. He bet $34,000, making his winning total $69,000, even higher than yesterday’s. In a word: ASTOUNDING. His 6-day total is $257,700 (higher than Matt Jackson’s 8-day total in the “2 Years Ago” game).

Final Jeopardy (10/3/2017) Austin Rogers, Amy Servat, Ryan Hughey

A triple stumper from each round:

OCCUPATIONS ($2000) This writer: “God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling”

BEFORE & AFTER ($2000) Bob Woodward’s capital newspaper hitches up to an old type of fast horse-drawn carriage

2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “European Authors”

“to explain… Harry by the artless division into wolf and man is a hopelessly childish attempt”, he wrote in 1927. show

Is the word “psalm” an acceptable answer for the first daily double?

    • VJ says:

I was wondering that myself. I think psalm is acceptable if we’re going by the dictionary definition — “a sacred song or hymn.” Some might get more technical about it, but I would point out that the title in the clue is straight outta Lamentations.

    Austin, the next Ken Jennings….

  3. Lucille says:

Austin is weird. I wish he would comb his hair. The man is smart, but he seems full of himself. My friends who watch the show agree. Most of jeopardy was pre-empted for a LV press conference today, so I didn’t get to see Austin win again.

    • VJ says:

@Lucille, what you said about Austin combing his hair really had me rolling! It reminded me of when I worked with a girl named Judy many years ago. She was in the boss’s office getting yelled at for not combing her hair when I happened to walk in. He said “What is that? The Einstein Look?” When I turned around and saw her hair, it did look like Einstein’s and I just burst out laughing.

Maybe Austin is just having fun or maybe being full of oneself is a byproduct of being super intelligent by “genetics, luck, karma” and too cool for school. LOL. Idk, but I must say, I love the big bets. It seemed like he thought he had made a lot already so it wouldn’t bug him if he lost and if that’s true, we could be seeing some more colossal wins (as long as he gets FJ right, of course).

PS – I moved your comment to the recap thread because the comments on the Who Won post will get deleted tomorrow.

The third highest one day total of all time, behind Roger Craig’s $77K and Ken Jennings’ $75K. He now has two of the six highest one game wins of all time(seven if you count Jerome Vered’s $34K win in 1992 as $68K by doubling the score to the current values). May never again see a $69K winner in the same show where an opponent is not locked out of the game going into FJ!

  5. Lou says:

VJ, Winston Churchill was a British prime minister that led the victory of his forces in WW2, he was not part of the apartheid. He died way before Mandela gave that speech. Do you remember the two sides of the apartheid regime that battled in south Africa, VJ?

I was sweating a little bit thinking Austin wouldn’t get past his five game streak but now he surpassed Alex Jacob and buzzy Cohen in wins, but can he get past Seth Wilson’s total?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, the clue didn’t say anything about apartheid per se, or even a hint on the year it was said. The oppression part must have made Amy think of the Holocaust, although after WWII, Germany was split in two so it could also have made someone think of the reunification there.

Austin if I didn’t have a little crush on you, you’d be falling for my electric shock pen prank.
