Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/2/2017) in the category “American Artists” was:

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS GRANT WOOD?

“Grant Wood (February 13, 1891 – February 12, 1942) is Iowa’s most famous artist and his painting American Gothic is one of America’s most famous paintings. Wood was born on a farm near Anamosa in 1891 but moved to Cedar Rapids when he was ten years old after the death of his father. From then on, Wood lived most of his life in Cedar Rapids or Iowa City, dying of cancer the day before his 51st birthday…. Grant Wood became the spokesman for the Regionalist painting movement, when he famously and (somewhat outrageously) remarked that he “got all his best ideas for painting while milking a cow.” As part of playing that role, he frequently wore bib overalls in photos. Even if he did milk cows when he was a young boy, as an adult, this was not a part of his life.” (American Gothic House: About Grant Wood)

Bonnie thought it was Whistler. That cost her $400, leaving her with $2,000.

Veryl thought it was Winslow. She lost her $3,000 bet, finishing with $6,400.

Austin got it right. He bet a big $22,800 and won this match with $65,600. His 5-day total is $188,700. What a giant leap, eh? An epic bet in a DD and then another one in FJ, and they both paid off. Congrats, Austin!

I think we know a lot by now about Grant Wood and his Iowa roots. If Mr. Rodgers had held up a couple of more seconds, I’m sure he would have gotten “Der Tod in Venedig”. He answered too quickly on that one. And we’ve had questions on Thomas Mann before.

@Rhonda, Yes I did get a chance to watch Jeopardy on the syndicated Channel at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. However it was preempted at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on ABC. Austin Is a real joy to watch. Not only is he a showman but highly intelligent. Congrats Austin.

  3. Dexter says:

Here in Chicago abc7 will run it again during the night (at about 2 am) if it was pre-empted for any reason but I usually have to set up the DVR for it – We DVR it everyday so my wife and I can watch it together so today, with everything going on, I checked to make sure it was recording and then checked it again at the end, without spoiling anything to make sure it was recorded so I would know whether or not I’d have to DVR it overnight.

  4. Cece says:

Wow, just wow! Very impressive gigantic bets—such confidence. I hate to say this, but I think it’s safe to predict how this story ends, But I believe he’s trying to maximize his wins, so kudos to him for accomplishing that.

And 5/5 on FJs as the icing on the cake. Sweet!

    • VJ says:

@Cece, yeah, big DD and FJ bets are fun to watch — when the player wins. I was wondering earlier if by the end of the week, he’ll have 9 of the 10 spots on that payout list I put on the weekly recap. Wouldn’t that be something to see?

      • Cece says:

Yeah, that would be something to see, and not too far fetched for him.. If he keeps betting big on DDs and nailing FJ. He knows stuff, oh, and luck needs to keep on his side, too.

      • VJ says:

Yup, you’re right, he’ll need luck to stay on his side. Hopefully, he will only bet big when the category’s in his wheelhouse and not in an effort to beat his own or anyone else’s record.

I’m glad you commented. I wanted to tell you that Sticks can sing “Alouette.” She just popped up and started singing it last week. She sure surprised me. We really don’t even play it that much, she can’t say her Ls yet but she had the tune down pat!

        • Cece says:

Last night we were preempted here, maybe I’ll get to watch Austin tonight.

About Sticks, the little sparrow, singing “A’ouette”—that’s adorable.

  5. Lou says:

Jeopardy was not preempted here in the east coast so I lucked out, but congrats to Austin on his fifth win. He passed hunter appler and Lisa Schlitt in winnings and Tim aten. I was right in prediction of a streak of wins from Austin so we can sound the streak bell. Also. VJ, was grant wood.used in similar final jeopardy games in the past? And who is this Winslow painter that veryl mentioned?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, Veryl meant Homer Winslow. He was a New Englander, I believe.

@Rhonda, sorry you got preempted. My cable and my internet went out right in the middle of Wheel and it just came back on now!

  6. Richard Corliss says:

You really make your opponents look like tunnel klutzes, Austin.

  7. aaaa says:

Austin gets the fifth highest one day total of all time with his win (Jerome Vered would have had $68K if his longtime single game record under the old values in 1992 was doubled). Roger Craig $77K, Ken Jennings $75K, Andy Richter with $68K, and Skylar from kids week in Summer 2013 with $66K are the top four.

    • William Weyser says:

It’s S-K-Y-L-E-R, not S-K-Y-L-A-R, if you’re talking about Skyler Hornback, who won $66,600 on Kids Week in 2013, and is $15,700 the 4th highest Daily Double wager?

  8. Dalton Higbee says:

VJ was so so lucky to be able to watch Jeopardy! today.

    • VJ says:

Wow, I didn’t even know the show was getting preempted in other places. I am sure there will be clips online of Austin’s Daily Doubles. When he got his $7,500 one, he went through this strange little musical routine before saying his bet, and then of course. that huge bet on the second one.

Anybody else notice how he cuts up at random during the game but he never cracks a smile at the end when they show his winnings?

    • rhonda says:

Yes, VJ, Jeopardy is preempted here, too. You were lucky that you had it where you are. I wonder if Jacob will be able to watch it on his second channel?

    • Richard Corliss says:

Please don’t say a word, Dalton.
