Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/19/2017) in the category “Oscar Winners” was:

He’s the only actor to win 3 Best Actor Oscars, the most recent for his portrayal of a U.S. President.

New champ Joanna Kimmitt won $9,999 yesterday. In her second game, she goes up against these guys: Tom Blake, from New York, NY; and Justin Broughman, from Strasburg, VA.

Joanna found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Washington, D.C.” under the $1,000 clue, with 4 clues still to go. She was in the lead with $4,800, $2,000 more than Tom in second place. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

Joanna found the last Daily Double in “The Chandler” under the $1,200 clue, with 8 clues left after it. In the lead with $10,200, she had $600 more than Tom in second place. She bet $1,200 and took a guess with dark paths. That was WRONG.

Tom finished in the lead with $8,800. Joanna was next with $7,800 and Justin was in third place with $7,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS DANIEL DAY-LEWIS?

Daniel Day Lewis won his first Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Christy Brown in “My Left Foot” (1990). His second one came in 2008 for the role of Daniel Plainview in “There Will Be Blood” (2007) and the third was for portraying our 16th President in “Lincoln” (2012). IMDB.com has a list of all his awards and nominations up to this date, which may remain that way if Daniel Day-Lewis completely retires, as he announced in June 2017.

Take a crack at this Sporcle Quiz and name all the actors who have won Best Actor two or more times. There’s only 9– well, 8 when you don’t even have to think about one 😉

Justin got it right. He doubled his score to $15,200.

Joanna thought it was Kevin Spacey. She lost her $7,500 bet and had $300 left.

Tom got it right, too. He bet $7,801 and won the game with $16,601. He is the new Jeopardy! champ.

I fear I do not know very much about Daniel Day-Lewis, but I believe he is an actor. His father, however, was Cecil Day-Lewis, a former Poet Laureate of England and Oxford Don. I have all of his detective-mysteries which is wrote under the penname Nicholas Blake. By-the-way, Thursday nights here in the Flathead Jeopardy is preëmpted by NFL Football.

Is it just me but did this sentence/clue give anybody else a headache?

“This 3-word motto is on D.C. license plates to protest its lack of voting rights; a 2016 proposal is start the motto “end”

    • VJ says:

Yes, Becci. LOL! I totally agree. Also I missed the explanation Alex gave on the Zero Sum category at the start of the second round and was plenty confused.

      • Cece says:

VJ, I can’t make sense of the 2nd part of that clue—”a 2016 proposal is start the motto “end.” Is it missing a word, or something? (I didn’t see the show).

        • VJ says:

no, Cece, that’s the way it was worded. I checked it over when I typed it because it didn’t make sense to me either, but that’s what it said, so I said all righty then. Apparently, they have changed the motto on D.C. plates already so the phrase starts with “end”

        • Cece says:

Okay, got it; start the motto with the word “end”. Imbeciles! (Whoever wrote that clue.)

Thank you so very much; also for the link to the article. 🙂

        • VJ says:

I guess they went over their word quota with the Shakespeare clues 😉

        • Cece says:

I guess, lol. For some strange reason, I got the $400 & $2000 Zero Sum clues (posted on the “12 clues” link). Yeah, it was a confusingly strange category, sort of a “don’t say the correct wrong answer” category.

Would like to try the other 2 clues, so may I have zero sum for $800 & $1600 please, VJ?

        • VJ says:

          Sure, Cece, here they are:

($800) Don’t ignore this order to come to court

($1600) Elizabeth Banks earned this 3-word Latin phrase with her degree from Penn

        • Cece says:

Thanks, VJ, you rule! Do I have money in my pocket with subpoena & magna cum laude? That’s the best I could do. Of course the correct wrong answers popped first in my mind—les vaches! 🙂

        • VJ says:

Yup, you got ’em. And you know what? After Tom got that Elizabeth Banks one, Alex said something like, right, not summa etc. And I was like what the hell is he talking about? LOL!

          Justin got the other one.

        • Cece says:

          Hahaha!

    • rhonda says:

I’m glad that it wasn’t just me!
The “sum” category totally threw me, too, even with Alex’s explanation. They are really trying to be too cute in some of their categories. I miss the days of the more straightforward ones.

  3. Lou says:

Well the leader curse continues but.at least we know Joanna never heard of Daniel day Lewis. Furthermore do you remember the movie London’s Fallen, VJ? It also had an actor that played a president. There are also two tv series that played the characters of presidents like keifer Sutherland in designated survivor and scandal’s Fitzgerald Grant. I wonder if these guys have won Oscars for president roles in tv?

    • VJ says:

I never saw that film, Lou. For TV, they get Emmys. Kiefer got a lot of nominations for “24”, I know that.

Zounds! The clues in that Shakespeare category were long.

  4. William Weyser says:

I’m sure that Richmond Curtiss can sympathize with Justin, because Richmond also got dinged on the Apennines Daily Double. However, the 2 mispronunciations were slightly different. Justin added an L, while Richmond left out the N between the I & the 2nd E, and I have never heard of the Apennines when Richmond was on JEOPARDY! on 2/27/15.

  5. Richard Corliss says:

That is a very good quality picture.
