Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/18/2017) in the category “Historic Connections” was:

A 1796 medical experiment with an English farm girl ultimately led to this breakthrough announced in Geneva May 8, 1980.

3x champ Manny Abell won $1.00 yesterday to bring his winnings up to $42,799. In Game 4, he takes on these two ladies: Chelsea Feltman, from Brooklyn, NY; and Joanna Kimmitt, from Long Beach, CA.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE ERADICATION OF SMALLPOX?

On May 8, 1980, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the goal of global eradication of smallpox had been achieved, more than 180 years after Edward Jenner developed the first vaccination for the dreaded disease from cowpox. PBS recounts what it took to accomplish this great victory.

In the 21st century, there have been concerns that the smallpox virus could be used as a bioterrorism agent. The Center for Disease Control addresses that and who should get the smallpox vaccine here

Chelsea thought it was the chickenpox vaccine. That cost her $401. She had $8,799 left.

Joanna got it right. Her $399 bet brought her up to $9,999.

Manny wrote down “in vitro.” He lost his $17,000 bet and was left with $2,000. That made Joanna the new Jeopardy! champ.

Perhaps Manny was trying to bet and win big so he can make it up for his $1 win yesterday?

    • William Weyser says:

I guess so, but I was thinking that Manny might have known a lot about Historic Connections, except for the Eradication of Smallpox. Manny, just because you know a lot about a category, doesn’t always mean that you should wager a lot. Plus, your $17,000 wager allows an eliminated player named Chelsea back into contention, which is something that you shouldn’t do, but you still have already picked up a lot of money: $43,799.

  2. Lou says:

Well at least we.know Manny did what he could. Furthermore the smallpox vaccine could also eradicate shingles viruses right VJ? If Manny only bet 5000 he still would have won big and retain the championship title. But at least he knows how to be a great sport.

    • VJ says:

Yeah, you might say the ladies bet they wouldn’t know FJ and Manny bet he would. There is a unique shingles vaccine that the CDC only recommends for people over 60, whether they have had chickenpox or not.

      • Lou says:

Yup that’s for sure. Being vaccinated against smallpox will keep you healthy for as long as possible but getting shingles is never a good sign. Kids should be vaccinated in order to stay healthy so they don’t get sick right VJ? Still though we already have a strong group of tournament of champions contestants to get the 250000 prize. Also is there a chance that the attorney from Michigan on Friday will win big?

  3. EricS says:

Just a horrible wager by the leader. Anywhere in the range of 201-599 covers a double up by Joanna (if they were both right) and completely locks Chelsea out.

    • VJ says:

I wished he had bet more on that last DD. He would have had a runaway. Oddly enough, on the 2 days he got FJ right, Manny didn’t bet big. Ah well, I guess that’s just the way the mop flops sometimes

    • Jacob Ska says:

@Erics, interesting you commented because when I watched the game & saw Manny’s fj wager you came to my mind immediately. I was wondering what your impression of his wager would be because of your background on game theory. I couldn’t see the rationale in his wager & had no explanation. 🙁
