Final Jeopardy: Novelists (1-2-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/2/2018) in the category “Novelists” was:

A 2015 BBC list of the 25 greatest British novels included 12 by women, 3 of them by this woman who died in 1941.

New champ Nick Spicher won $15,201 yesterday. In his second game, his opponents are: Olev Jaakson, from New York, NY; and Saralee Etter, from Pataskala, OH.

Round 1 Categories: The ’80s: Who Said It? – Symptoms – All-American Food – Answer the Homophone! – Short Stories – “Light” Music

Saralee found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Symptoms” under the $800 clue on the 9th pick of the round. She was in second place with $1,400, half of Nick’s lead. She bet $1,000 and she tried gall bladder disease. That was WRONG.

Round 2 Categories: It’s Historical Arrested Development – Canine Companions – Old Testament Transportation – Double “O” 7-letter Words – African Islands – A Barrel Full of Coopers

Nick found the first Daily Double in “Historical Arrested Development” under the $1,600 clue on the 10th pick. He was in the lead with $10,000 at this point, $4,800 more than Saralee in second place. He bet $3,000 and guessed the House of Representatives. That was WRONG.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS VIRGINIA WOOLF?

British writer, Virginia Woolf, was born in Kensington, England in 1882. She struggled with depression and mood swings at various times throughout her life, and committed suicide in March 1941 at age 59. The three books that she contributed to the BBC’s list of 25 greatest British novels are: No. 2: “To the Lighthouse” (1927), No. 3 “Mrs. Dalloway” (1925), and No. 16 “The Waves” (1925).

In a poll on the Virginia Woolf Blog, those same three books polled highest, only “The Waves” came in first.

Olev had Doris Lessing. He bet half of what he had, leaving him $2,000.

Saralee didn’t have a response. She lost $3,600 and finished with $8,000.

Nick went with Edith Wharton. He lost $8,601 so he landed in second place with $5,999. So Saralee Etter is the new Jeopardy! champ.

That was the most impressive thing I’ve ever seen, Saralee.

  2. VJ says:

Congrats to Saralee. I was really rooting for her. I loved how she got these 2 clues in Double Os category

    ($1200) It’s slang for a police informant

($2000) An incompetent prizefighter, or boxer Joe of comic strip fame who hung up his gloves in 1984

I’d really like to know if either or both of the guys knew these and she just beat them on the buzzer.

VJ, what was slang for a police informant, I’ve already forgotten!
I was happy that Saralee won, too, I really like her.

@Rhonda, It’s a stoolie. Besides the double 0s, it had to have 7 letters so stool pigeon was out. The way Saralee said it made me chuckle.

She also got a laugh from the audience when she said a bender on that brews/bruise clue, and a chuckle from Olev — like that was the last thing he was expecting.

Thanks so much, VJ, in one ear and out the other with me these days.
          Saralee is a cutie.

If I remember correctly, there was a similar clue that featured Sara teasdale as the answer last season, do you remember that VJ? How did these guys not know Virginia Woolf? Suicide was the problem with female novelists like teasdale and woolf due to lack of money and ideas. Also, wasn’t dylan thomas also having a mental breakdown like woolf did? What was his problem before his death at 39, VJ?

    • VJ says:

That was last June, Lou, when they had a clue about Sylvia Plath and The Bell Jar. I mentioned Sara Teasdale in the comments. They actually haven’t had one about her or her morbid poetry since 2011 — It was in a category called Hair Lines and worth $1200: Sara Teasdale: “when I am dead and over me bright” this month “shakes out her rain-drenched hair… I shall not care”
