Final Jeopardy: Special Days (1-17-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/17/2018) in the category “Special Days” was:

A 1954 act amended a 1938 one by striking out this word & replacing it with “Veterans”

5x champ Gilbert Collins made a bundle yesterday, jumping his winnings up to $84,201. In Game 6, his challengers are: Lee Quinn, from Raleigh, NC; and Amanda Griggs, from Iron Mountain, MI.

Round 1 Categories: Galapagos Adaptation – Food Stuff – Presidential Burial Places – The 1893 Chicago World’s Fair – Original Lineups – The “IS” Storm

Gilbert found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The “IS” Storm” under the $800 clue on the 4th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $800, $200 more than Lee in second place. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Lee finished in the lead with $7,200. Gilbert was second with $6,200 and Amanda was last with $3,800.

Round 2 Categories: A Banner Year – Dictionary Definitions – Forbes Wealthiest Families in the U.S. – World Capitals – The TV Devil – In the “D” Tales

Lee found the last Daily Double in “In the ‘D’ Tales” under the $800 clue on the 15th pick. After brilliantly running the “Banner Year” category, he was in the lead with $12,400, $5,000 more than Gilbert in second place. He bet $4,000, and he was RIGHT.

Lee finished in the lead with a runaway $21,200. Gilbert was next with $9,400 and Amanda was in third place with $6,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS ARMISTICE?

Armistice Day was originally celebrated to commemorate the cease-fire that went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, unofficially ending World War I. First recognized in 1926, an Act passed on 5/13/1938 officially made Armistice Day a Federal holiday. In 1947, World War II veteran, Raymond Weeks (“the Father of Veterans Day”) presented a petition to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, to change it to a day honoring veterans of all wars. During Eisenhower’s presidency, Congress amended the 1938 Act, effective 6/1/1954, striking out “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” More details on the Dept. of Veterans Affairs website.

“Old timers” will recall the early 1970s, when they were messing around with holidays and daylight savings time and such. Veterans Days was moved to the 4th Monday in October by the Uniform Holiday Bill, signed by LBJ. Veterans were unhappy with the loss of the 11-11-11 symbolism and, effective in 1978, Gerald Ford restored the holiday to November 11th.

Amanda’s final response was “Servicemen.” (It looked like she crossed out the word “Armed.”) She lost her $6,000 bet, finishing with $600.

Gilbert got it right. His $3,801 bet brought him up to $13,201.

Lee got it right, too. He bet $1,200 so he won today’s match with $22,400. Lee Quinn is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Congrats to Gilbert on his five wins, he performed well but congrats to Lee on his impressive performance. Let’s see if he can build a streak like Gilbert did. Speaking of veterans day VJ, why wasn’t it renamed armistice day though? Every year it’s veterans day but does it hold any meaning? Armistice would work and it could honor the veterans.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I would appreciate if you would read the information next to the book in the recap between the end of the second round and the FJ results. I spend some time every day looking those things up and the answers to your questions are already in there. Thanks.

      • Lou says:

Of course and I understand. Thanks for sharing this, much appreciated. And yes, we will see you in the tournament of champions, Gilbert. Plus, do you think Tim Kutz, Todd Giese, Justin Bender, Fred Vaughn, and Philip Tiu will be added into the 2018 tournament after this season is over, VJ?

        • VJ says:

No, Lou. Jeopardy! updated its Tournament Tracker and now they only have 3 people on there– Gilbert, Kyle Becker and Kate O’Connor.

    • Susan Ikenberry says:

Gilbert is a gentleman. So glad we’ll see him again.

  2. Richard Corliss says:

We’ll see you in the tournament, Gilbert.

  3. VJ says:

Holy River Cities, Batman! I just put up this World Capitals and Their Rivers post last Saturday– not in time to help Gilbert out but it helped me and (I hope) anyone else who read it.

At least Gilbert made the most of it yesterday to get up to $84,201 plus won a spot in the ToC.

But Lee — whoa, Lee! Very impressive!

So Lee run 2 categories, right? Anyway, that Galapagos category made me wonder how was Alex’s trip with the kid (Stephen?). I’m sure Alex needed naps everyday after a couple hours with the kid.

That blue=footed booby is a beauty. Ever since Eric mentioned their dance in here, once in a while I watch the video on Youtube. It’s better than ‘dancing with the stars.’

      • EricS says:

Awww. Thank you Cece! It is nice to be remembered for an impact. They are certainly oddly adorable birds.

      • VJ says:

yes, Lee ran the Presidential Burial Places, too. I’m sure Gilbert and Amanda knew most if not all of those, but he just got in there faster. I gave him big props on the lightening quick way he ran Banner Year. It was off the charts! Categories like that usually have a miss or two with a player being a year off one way or the other.

Gilbert is humble, too. There’s an article I will put on the contestant news page soon where Gilbert assured everyone that all the contestants know most of the answers when pointing out how crucial buzzer timing is.

I would put the link in for that video but what’s the title? I just saw one to the tune of Mana-Mana, and the PBS one has the male booby catching his unfaithful partner in the act. lol. (I was imagining what the boobies were really saying to each other!) Otherwise, they seem to be saying, “hey, baby, these are bluest feet you’re ever gonna see on this beach” 😉

        • Cece says:

That’s hilarious, VJ (the cheating booby), lol! I’ve seen a few videos, but don’t know their titles. One of them is:“Blue-Footed Boobies Mating Dance is the Best Thing Ever” – it’s an exaggeration, of course. The video is just silly, like boobies are. One commenter on Youtube said: “these birds have serious foot fetish!”

        • VJ says:

Okay, I found that one. To find the PBS one, you just have to put in “blue-footed booby PBS.” It was funny! They showed the male booby’s face close up when he caught her. “Don’t even try to act innocent, you bleep. I saw the whole thing.” LOL!

      • rhonda says:

Ceci, I thought of that kid, too. Poor Alex, he probably recorded those clues before he had to deal with the dear boy. I wouldn’t be surprised if we never hear about such contests again lol!

        • Cece says:

Lol, Rhonda—next contest will probably have a minimum age requirement, like, 25.

Oh, VJ, the facial expression on that bird when he saw the little ho with another male booby…he was crushed!

          Eric, thank you!
