Final Jeopardy: The Movies (1-11-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/11/2018) in the category “The Movies” was:

It’s the first Oscar nominee for Best Picture to be produced by an internet streaming service.

New champ Gilbert Collins won $8,399 yesterday. In his second game, his competitors are: Rebecca Zoshak, from State College, PA; and Julie Zauzmer, from Washington, D.C.

Round 1 Categories: Plumbing for Clues – College Hoops – State Seals – Post “Ap”ocalypse – I’m Just Not That Into You – Ghosting

Gilbert found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “State Seals” under the $1,000 clue on the 10th pick of the round. He was the only one with any money, a substantial $3,800 he mostly got from running the “College Hoops” category. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Each ray of the large star on its state seal has an emblem of one of the 5 Civilized Tribes. show

Gilbert finished in the lead with $8,000. Julie was second with $3,600 and Rebecca was last with $800.

Round 2 Categories: Mycology & Mythology – Early America – Europea”N” Geography – Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations – Rhyming Phrases – Vinyl Resting Place

Julie found the first Daily Double in “Europea’N’ Geography” under the $1,200 clue on the 13th pick. She was in third place with $4,400 at this point, $5,600 behind Gilbert’s lead. She bet $3,000 and guessed Nantes. That was WRONG.

This city is about 20 miles northeast of Cannes. show

Gilbert found the last Daily Double in “Bartlett’s Familar Quotations” under the $1,200 clue, with 7 clues left after it. In the lead with $12,400, he had $5,600 more than Rebecca in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

In 1798 he told his men, “From the summit of yonder pyramids forty centuries look down upon you” show

Gilbert finished in the lead with $14,400. Rebecca was next with $7,600 and Julie was in third place with $3,800.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right. Turned out there was a reason for that.

WHAT IS “MANCHESTER BY THE SEA”?

Early in 2016, Amazon Studios scored quite a coup when 6 Oscar nods, including Best Picture, went to “Manchester by the Sea” and it became the first streaming service to achieve such a feat. It went on to win 2 Oscars: Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Casey Affleck) and Best Original Screenplay (Kenneth Lonergan).

Julie got it right. She bet $3,798 bringing her up to $7,598.

Rebecca just had a question mark. She lost $7,575, leaving her with $25.00.

Gilbert wrote down “The Social Network.” That only cost him $401 so he won the match with $14,399. His 2-day total is $22,798

Final Jeopardy (1/11/2018) Gilbert Collins, Julie Zauzmer, Rebecca Zoshak

Clue Screw Up: A clip of Alex Trebek came up next. He said: “A word about today’s Final Jeopardy!, ladies and gentlemen: we could have been a little more precise with our wording. We should have indicated that “Manchester by the Sea” was distributed by a streaming service, not produced by one. The contestant who was affected by this has been invited back and will appear with us again later this year.”

So Rebecca Zoshak will be back to play another game. Hope she wins. Maybe the cluewriters should check the film’s Awards page on IMDB next time. The Best Picture Oscar goes to the producers and who will get it is always listed there.

A triple stumper from each round:

GHOSTING ($800) A governess is convinced that the 2 children in her care see ghosts in this novella by Henry James

RHYMING PHRASES ($800) A full-length monster movie

VJ, would you be able to tell me what the first clue was in “College Hoops”? Thanks!

    • VJ says:

Sure, Rhonda, here ya go —

COLLEGE HOOPS ($200) In 1988 Glenn Tropf of Holy Cross set a single-season record by making 63.4% of these long shots

  3. Lou says:

Manchester by the Sea is a great movie, I like to see it again soon. And are you into Romance Movies VJ? I believe Pride and Prejudice was sort of romantic along with The Holiday starring Kate Winslet. Also Nice France is a great place to visit although its sad to see what happened there in 2016. Still though I wonder how julie didn’t know Nice. Overall, I guess Gilbert got lucky with betting small this time when Alex tells him to win big. lets hope he wins again tomorrow.

    • VJ says:

I like historical films and comedies, Lou. What I really don’t like is when the trailer of a movie makes you really want to see it and then when you do, you find out you’ve already seen all the best scenes in the trailer!

Hooray! We got to all the Daily Doubles today 😀

Hard to believe Jeopardy cluewriters actually admitted they made a mistake in fj. Haven’t heard that in years. Amazing.

    • William Weyser says:

Actually, the last time that this has happened, I think, was on 12/29/15, when 1 lady named Ashley Wilson was disadvantaged by a very poorly worded clue about Female Astronauts & Famous Last Names. Ashley was invited back the following Thursday of the same week, on the last day of 2015, and fortunately, she got her revenge on that day by winning, and then won again, and then, lost.

    • VJ says:

Yes, it was Ashley Wilson in this game and she was back 2 days later

      • Richard Corliss says:

Why does Alex tell the contestants to hang on just a second when they’re going into their first commercial break?

  5. Dalton Higbee says:

When is Rebecca coming back? Hopefully it’s not way TOO long.
