  1. John Guadagnini says:

Based on the comments I have read I think there was no 2016 tournament of champions, and this is why the 2016 and 2017 champions for both teachers and college are in the 2017 tournament. Can someone please confirm this? Secondly, what system does jeopardy use to group the 15 qualifiers into the five semi-final matches? The same question applies when grouping the five winners and four wild-card qualifiers into the three semi-final matches.

    • VJ says:

That’s right, John, they didn’t have a tournament of champions in 2016. The last one, in 2015, was going on in November same as this one.

Can’t help you with the second question — I haven’t really looked into how they chose the quarter-final groups this time around . As I recall, In the 2015 ToC, all the players came from the same season and there were some who already played against each other during their season so they didn’t have them in the same game in the quarter-finals. But I don’t think they had that same situation this year.

  2. julia mallon says:

VJ, Anand Kandaswamy is still missing from the tracker.

    • Brian Phan says:

Anand Kandaswamy was on the Tournament of Champion tracker with 3-day total $57,001. He will be on the Tournament of Champion tracker with Season 35 standings.

    • VJ says:

He is not going to be on this list. See my Nov. 1st comment below.

    • Brian Phan says:

Maybe Anand Kandaswamy won 3-day total $57,001. Can we update Anand Kandaswamy after the next 2 weeks the Tournament of Champions?

      • VJ says:

@Brian, I will start a list soon. If you’ve been watching the show faithfully, you will know what that means — when I feel like it.

  3. VJ says:

This list is closed now and no one else will be added to it.

I am not going to start a new list for a while, at least not until a good number of players have qualified for it. Actually, I might not even start one at all if people are going to keep posting additions on the very day someone’s run is over.

Here’s the deal: I like to update the ToC list on the weekend and it is just not necessary unless the weekend has passed and I didn’t add a player who should be on it.

  4. Dalton Higbee says:

    Quarter-final matchups:
Monday 11/6. Buzzy Cohen vs. Hunter Appler vs. Pranjal Vachaspati.
Tuesday 11/7. Tim Aten vs. Lilly Chin vs. Jason Sterlacci.
Wednesday 11/8. Austin Rogers vs. Alan Lin vs. David Clemmons.
Thursday 11/9. Seth Wilson vs. Lisa Schlitt vs. Sam Deutsch.
Friday 11/10. Andrew Pau vs. Justin Vossler vs. Jon Eisenman.

    • Richard Corliss says:

I think the semifinalist winners will be: Buzzy, Lilly, Alan, Seth, & Andrew
Wild Cards: Hunter, Pranjal, Lisa, & Sam

      • Brian Phan says:

I don’t think so Richard, Hunter Appler David Clemmons, Seth Wilson, Sam Deutsch, Justin Vossler, and Jon Eisenman are out. These Semi-finalists winner are goes to Buzzy Cohen, Andrew Pau, Jason Sterlacci, Alan Lin and Lisa Schlitt, and the Wild Cards Spots goes to Pranjal Vachaspati, Austin Rogers, Lilly Chin, and Tim Aten.

  5. Brian Phan says:

I think Austin Rogers wins big as same as Philip Tiu and Michael Bilow both won $96,000.

  6. Dalton Higbee says:

Hopefully the Tournament of Champions will air this November.

  7. aaaa says:

Todd Giese loses his spot as Justin won tonight. Todd is now the alternate. THe TofC is taping September 18 and 19th, as per Jboard, which means it will be probably airing in November sweeps. The new season of J! starts 9/11(reruns of Teen, COllege, and Teachers tourney start on MOnday 7/31 for six weeks), and the TofC will probably air in November sweeps pre-November 23rd, perhaps 11/6-11/17 to avoid conflict with Thanksgiving. Which means there are 43 regular games left or so.

  8. julia mallon says:

VJ, can you change the title to 2017 Tournament of Champions?

    • VJ says:

@julia, I would actually prefer to leave the title 2016-17 because a number of players in the Top 15 played their games in 2016

  9. Brian Phan says:

Gavin Borchert was on the Tournament of Champion tracker with 3 day total $50,200. He will be on the Tournament of Champion tracker with Season 34.

    • Lou says:

Gavin is not on the top 15 so I’m afraid he might not be in the toc. So I think that only Deborah Elliott.can get.her.streak going just like pranjal did last year when he defeated Ellen.corrigan.

      • Brian Phan says:

Yeah That’s a same thing, Pranjal Vachaspati won sixth streak in a row with 6 day total $137,088. He will be on the Tournament of Champion tracker with Season 34. And Deborah Elliott won third streak in a row with 3 day total $76,400. She will be on the Tournament of Champion tracker with Season 34.

        • Lou says:

No unfortunately, I know for a fact that Philip Tiu wil be back in 2018 for the toc but anyone that won 3 games that are below 90000 will not be eligible for the toc. The toc is only for those that have accumulated wins of 4 games or above and depending on how much you win in those games, you are guaranteed a spot on the toc.

  10. Richard Corliss says:

The tournament of champions is not in July, Dalton.

    • Dalton Higbee says:

I guess it is in November.

      • Lou says:

They are showing a repeat of the teen tournament the college tournament and the teacher’s tournament of 2017 starting July 31st. each of the tournaments will run for two weeks. so its six week hiatus until the new season starts on September 11th 2017.

      • Brian Phan says:

You are correct Dalton, the Tournament of Champions will air on November 6-17, 2017.

  11. Brian Phan says:

Peter Guekguezian was on Top 15 contestants on the Tournament of Champions with 3-day total $44,800. He will be on the Tournament of Champions with Season 34.

    • Lou says:

Yes but he will not be in the actual tournament because that amount won’t do it. it has to be 90000 dollars or above that to be in the toc. We already have the 15 people here for the november tournament

  12. Brian Phan says:

Tucker Dunn was on Top 15 contestants on the Tournament of Champions with 3-day total $39,999. He will be on the Tournament of Champions with Season 34.

    • Lou says:

Nope, afraid not, that 40000 is not going to be putting him in the toc because he needs to win at least 5 or 6 games. Unfortunately he lost therefore, he won’t be in the toc.

  13. Brian Phan says:

Do you put 3x Winners and 4x Winners no longer in the Top 15 in the Tournament of Champions Tracker?

  14. Dalton Higbee says:

Brian, I hope the tournament airs in November, this is the longest time between the last and the next ToCs. It is going to be the most confusing ever.

  15. Dalton Higbee says:

So I assume that the Teachers Tournament would not be taking place in Washington D.C. this year.

Does anyone know why that the last Tournament of Champions aired in Nov. 2015 and the next one probably won’t be until late 2017?

    • Richard Corliss says:

      No!

      • Dalton Higbee says:

        Well, maybe perhaps VJ knows!

        • VJ says:

Sorry, Dalton, I’m sure I know less about it than you do and I don’t think they will answer your particular question when they announce the next ToC.

If they do, you’ll probably see it before me because you are looking for it.

  16. VJ says:

Is it possible that one (or more) of the Top 15 could defer their spot to 2018? Maybe by the time they have the ToC, if several more 4x winners fall off the list, it will be an option.

  17. Richard Corliss says:

I hope another teachers tournament winner will be a lady.

    • Brian Phan says:

I don’t think so Richard, Last year, there will be no lady in the teachers tournament and This year there will be no lady in the teachers tournament. That is the winner will be a men in teachers tournament is Jason Sterlacci and David Clemmons for $100,000.

  18. Brian Phan says:

Grant McSheffrey was on the Tournament of Champion tracker with 3-day total $69,201. He will be on the Tournament of Champion tracker with Season 34.

    • Lou says:

afraid not, grant is not in the top 15 so he is out. Therefore, Justin Bender and Philip Tiu will have to be prepared for the 2018 tournament of champions since there will be people that wil be pushed back to next year.

  19. WCS Taylor says:

So if what I read below is correct – the Tournament of Champions will be in May of 2017? Need to prepare for the Kirstin Cutts-mania again!! #TeamCutts

    • Dalton Higbee says:

The Teachers Tournament is going to air in May. You know Kirstin Cutts will not make it to the ToC.

      • Brian Phan says:

That’s right Dalton, the Teachers Tournament is going to air in May 8-19 2017. Kirstin Cutts will make it to the Tournament of Champions with 4 day-total: $49,403

    • Brian Phan says:

We don’t have in may of 2017 in the Tournament of Champions it suppose to be in November 2017. Need to prepare for the Kirstin Cutts-mania again! #TeamCutts was on 4 day-total:49,403

      • Richard Corliss says:

We don’t have a tournament of champions in November 2017 we have it in May 2018.

        • Brian Phan says:

We don’t have the tournament of champions in May 2018. It’s suppose to be will air on November 6-17, 2017 on the Tournament of Champions and the Teachers Tournament will air on May 2018.

  20. Michael Thomas says:

I think after the College Championship is completed, and that college champion is added to the TOC list, that should be the TOC field right there, in my opinion. I don’t see Philip getting bumped. I think he’s gonna make it the same way Michael Bilow did back in 2015. Only difference is Philip’s won a little more than him. Just my assumption. Guess we’ll see what happens from there.

    • Dalton Higbee says:

I think Philip Tiu is likely going to miss out on the Tournament of Champions.

      • Lou says:

Nope I told you before he won’t miss out on.the tournament of champions he has won 97000 dollars.in 3 games just like Mike below did last year.but Laurie MacDougall is definitely out.you probably didn’t even know that Michael bilow was in the 2015 tournament.

    • William Weyser says:

Michael, I hope that the TOC field is complete, after that college champion wins the College Championship, because I don’t want to see anybody bump Philip Tiu off the TOC standings.

  21. Alex Epstein says:

When will the 2017 TOC air? Will it be in may 2017?

  22. Chip n Dip says:

When is the 2016 Tournament of Champions going to air?

    • VJ says:

Well, last year, they didn’t have enough players who automatically qualified for the ToC. Even now, they only have 6.

I’m going to have to change the title of this article to 2017 :)

      • Dalton Higbee says:

I hope the Tournament of Champions is in February or May 2017.

        • William Weyser says:

I actually hope it airs in February, after the College Championship, because I want to see Philip Tiu in the Tournament Of Champions.

        • Brian Phan says:

Dalton, we don’t have the Tournament of Champions is in February or May 2017. They should be November 6-17, 2017

  23. Dalton Higbee says:

Can this year’s Teen Tournament winner qualify for the 2017 Tournament of Champions?

    • Richard Corliss says:

According to wikipedia, none of the teen tournament winners made to the finals. They put them on the list until 2000, so they can’t do it.

      • Dalton Higbee says:

The Teen Tournament winner will win $100,000 this year, so it is possible if the Teen Tourney winner makes it to the next Tournament of Champions.

        • Brian Phan says:

Those are goes to college and teachers in the tournament of champions tracker but not teen tournament.

    • Brian Phan says:

I don’t think so Dalton, The Teen Tournament can’t be in The Tournament of Champions 2017. It goes to college and teachers in the tournament of champions tracker.

  24. stellab says:

    Hi VJ and everyone –

Thanks for posting this list. I’m a bit disappointed – no TOC until 2017? That’s a loooong time!

You mentioned Keith Williams, who did the TD tracker. Keith is the best :-) !!!

    Take care up there –
    “stellab”

  25. Mary Scully says:

Will Buzzy be in this Tournament of Champions?

    • VJ says:

Buzzy will definitely be in the next Tournament of Champions.

The one they are showing on TV right now is a rerun from last November. It was taped and aired well before Buzzy appeared on the show

  26. Mathwiz100 says:

Just remembered that the #2 person on this list, Pau, lost to the #1 guy on the list, Cohen… it would be interesting to see the two rematch.

  27. EO says:

Will harris qualify then for Tournament of Champions? I thought you had to win 5x before qualifying. Based on his 3x win as of today, and his winnings, he would be right after Laurie….

    • VJ says:

I don’t know the answer to your question. The TOC Tracker on Jeopardy.com actually still has some 3x winners on it whose winnings have been topped.

You could ask Keith Williams at The Final Wager. He knows more about it than me .

  28. Dalton Higbee says:

Tim Kutz came very close to winning a fifth win.

  29. Cece says:

In 2015, by the end of January we had two 5-time champions. So far, 2016 is not looking very good.

If only Fred hadn’t blown it…
