U.S. Beats Germany to Advance to Women’s World Cup Final

The United States team continued its strong play by beating Germany 2-0 in a World Cup semifinal in Montreal on June 30th. The U.S. will play the winner of the Japan—Great Britain semifinal for the championship on July 4th in Vancouver.

After a scoreless first half, Germany’s Celia Sasic had a chance to give Germany the lead on a penalty kick. She didn’t just miss, she kicked it completely wide of the net. How the hell can a player at that level kick it that wide? A few minutes later, Carli Lloyd of the U.S. also had a penalty kick. She was successful and the U.S. had a 1-0 lead. Later on Kelley O’Hara scored a second U.S. goal to make what amounts to a blowout in World Cup soccer as the Americans won 2-0.

U.S. defensive play and goalie Hope Solo should be given a lot of credit for the American showing in this World Cup. They have not allowed a goal in their last 513 minutes of play.

I just hope the championship doesn’t come down to a shootout.
