Tigers Beat Royals Behind Victor Martinez’ Three Home Runs

The Detroit Tigers traveled to Kansas City for a big four game series June 16th-19th between the two A.L Central rivals. The Tigers, Royals, Chicago White Sox, and Cleveland Indians are all within three games of each other at the top of the division. Detroit”s veteran designated hitter Victor Martinez stepped to the forefront by hitting three home runs to lead the Tigers over the Royals 10-4 in the series opener.

At 37, Martinez is hitting as well as he ever has. After the June 16th game, Martinez was hitting .338 with 12 homers and 38 RBIs in 63 games so far this season. He had an injury plagued 2015 season, hitting just .245 with 11 homers and 64 RBIs in 120 games, but in 2014 he hit a career best .335 with 32 homers and 103 RBIs, and had a career best .409 on base percentage. It’s fortunate for Detroit that Victor Martinez has regained his form because the Tigers’ other big bat Martinez, right fielder J.D. Martinez, broke his elbow in the game while crashing into the wall chasing a fly ball and will be out 6 to 8 weeks.
