The Chicago Cubs finally beat their cross town rivals, the Chicago White Sox, ending the Whte Sox 11 game winning streak on June 27th. It was their longest winning streak since 1961. The White Sox and fallen off the radar until recently, and now they’re just a game and a half behind the front running Minnesota Twins in the American League Central Division. One big reason for this rise out of oblivion has been the play of first baseman Paul Konerko.
The 34 year old Konerko has been a fixture at first base for the White Sox for over a decade, where he has quietly gone about plying his trade. He has been a dependable source of power for the White Sox over the years, driving in over 100 runs 4 times. He’s got 56 so far this season, good for 4th best in the league, and he’s tied for the A.L. lead in home runs with 20. Oh, yeah, and he can field his position well, too; he’s got a lifetime fielding percentage of .995, but for some reason, he’s never won a Gold Glove award. Sometimes that quietly plying your trade thing doesn’t get you noticed. Well, we’ve noticed here at Fikkle Fame.
Every year, manager Ozzie Guillen somehow gets the White Sox into contention when it looks like they’ll be a non factor, and he’s doing it again. The white hot Chicago White Sox are back in it, and will be making it a 3 team race with the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins for the A.L. Central crown.
