We’re wondering why Lee Dewyze chose to sing “The Letter” on American Idol on March 23, 2010. Here are reactions around the web:
Idol Chatter: Lee DeWyze gets big point this week for choosing the Box Tops’ The Letter — I’m assuming it’s a tribute to Box Tops frontman Alex Chilton, who died last week.
Knox Animal: Not bad. His voice sounded pretty good, but that’s not the type of song I like hearing Lee sing.
Syracuse.com: Lee DeWyze started things off with a Joe Cocker-like arrangement of “The Letter.” It didn’t seem so great when he did it, but in retrospect, it was one of the better performances of the night, considering what was to follow.
Associated Content Since Alex’s untimely passing on March 17th wasn’t even mentioned and since they are supposed to be putting their own style on it, it just hit me as inappropriate … Simon Cowell said it was a poor choice out of the thousands of songs Lee could have picked and called it “corny.” It is at this point, I wanted to see like thousands of Boxtop fans pour in and tar and feather Simon and run him out on a rail.
Well, all we can say is, it was even more inappropriate if it was supposed to be Joe Cocker’s version!
RIP Alex Chilton (12/28/1950-3/17/2010)
