As the Milwaukee Brewers’ hopes for reaching the postseason as participants instead of spectators continue to fade, second baseman and leadoff hitter Rickie Weeks is having a breakout year. Weeks has been highly regarded since the Brewers made him the 2nd overall pick in the 2003 draft, but it has often been one step forward, two steps back with him. Injuries have played a big part of this; in 2009 he got off to good start only to suffer a season ending injury in May. Some questioned whether Weeks would ever live up to his potential. Well, the Brewers’ patience with Rickie Weeks is paying dividends in 2010.
Weeks is putting up some big numbers this season. Through July 28th, he was 4th in the National League in runs scored with 71. That type of thing would be expected of a lead off man, but Weeks has shown much more power than is usually seen at the top of the batting order. His 22 home runs are just four behind the league leader, Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds. His 66 RBIs are sixth best in the National League. Weeks does not steal a lot of bases, just seven so far this season, but that has more to do with Manager Ken Macha’s style of play with his power laden lineup (the Brewers lead the National League in home runs). Weeks is quite capable on the base paths; he stole 25 bases in 118 games in 2007.
Rickie Weeks is a free agent after the 2011 season, as are Prince Fielder and Corey Hart. While many people feel that Fielder will be too expensive for the Brewers to retain, there are indications they will try to sign Weeks. Rickie turns 28 in September and could be a solid performer at the top of the Milwaukee Brewers batting for several years.
