Back in the 70s, Telma Hopkins was half of Dawn (with Joyce Vincent) as in Tony Orlando and Dawn. These rhythmic ladies backed up Tony on such great hit songs as Tie A Yellow Ribbon and Knock Three Times. Believe it or not, a lot of parents considered Knock Three Times a BAD song! In the bad sense of the word … not the teenage good sense.
Telma went on to have a great career as an actress and 80s audiences came to know her as Aunt Rachel on the television sit-com Family Matters. She also was the voice on the song, Shaft, that says “shut your mouth.” Telma’s birthday is October 28. Happy Birthday!
Not such a common name in America, Portuguese and Spanish movies have plenty of Telmas.
Telma is the Portuguese form of Thelma and means ambitious
We’ve got plenty of Thelmas in the States.
There’s the hit movie, Thelma and Louise.
Remember Butterfly McQueen who played Prissy in Gone With the Wind?
“I don’t know nothing about birthin’ babies, Miss Scarlett.”
Butterfly was born Thelma McQueen.
