The Tim Tebow come from behind show ended January 14th as the New England Patriots trounced the Denver Broncos 45-10 in their NFC Playoff game. Thus ends the Tebowmania phenomenon for this season.
Tebow’s Christian faith been the center of attention this season, as if no sports figures have ever been religious before. He’s had zealous supporters and equally zealous detractors. The latter is best illustrated by the infamous expletive laced Christmas Eve tweet from comedian and avowed atheist Bill Maher, mocking Tebow in the Broncos’ loss that day.
Wow, Jesus just f*c*ed #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere in hell Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler “Hey, Buffalo’s killing them”
Maher does not follow football and wouldn’t know a nickleback in a defensive scheme from Nickleback the band, so we’re at a loss as to why he cares anyway. OK Bill, we get it you’re an atheist, and yeah were exercising free speech blah blah blah, but your tweet was classless. Other comedians have poked fun at Tebowmania to various degrees usually in a much less mean spirited manner.
As we said, there have been plenty of examples of religious people in sports. Legendary Green Bay Packers football coach Vince Lombardi stopped on his way to work every day and to attend a Catholic Mass. The late NFL Hall of Fame defensive end Reggie White would kneel down with members of both teams after football games and say a brief prayer. Baseball players, especially from Latin American countries, frequently cross themselves before stepping to the plate and point briefly to the sky after a key hit or good play.
This seems to be a big deal this days, with people on both sides getting all worked up about it. Perhaps it’s a reflection of our social media culture, where everyone expresses an opinion; or a reflection of our society which is becoming intolerant of other points of view. Tim Tebow is religious. Accept that, and let’s move on.
