Personally, we don’t understand or agree with the mentality that any amount of talent, wealth, hit songs, superstardom or what have you can excuse child molestation. Oh, no one knows for sure and God will be his judge? Well, we believe there are people who know for sure; otherwise there would never have been any need for confidentiality agreements.
At the same time Al Sharpton is singing MJ’s praises now saying: “Michael Jackson made culture accept a person of colour way before Tiger Woods, way before Oprah Winfrey, way before Barack Obama,” there’s still an article online from 2002 where MJ called Tommy Mottola a racist and Sharpton was “shocked.”
In that article Jackson himself is quoted as saying that people like James Brown and Sammy Davis, Jr. were “some of the real pioneers” who inspired him to become an entertainer. But what about the established Motown artists who crossed the culture barrier when Michael Jackson was still in short pants? The Temps, The Tops, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson just to name a few. Little Richard, anyone? He was a pioneer before Jackson was even born. Sam Cooke, Clyde McPhatter, Ben E. King. And how about Sly Stone? All of these and many more were important and essential contributors to the world of music and all of them had talent up the kazoo.
By the way, David Ruffin (who we happen to think could sing rings around Michael Jackson) also died in the month of June at the age of 50. But David never did hit icon status.
So what was the mystique of Michael Jackson? What hit song of his was so great that he should get a pass for his “pajama parties” and all that other weird bullshit?
Beats us.
