Ray Donovan Recap: A Girl Rides by on a Skateboard…

and she’s got a tee shirt on that says “FBI” on the back and “Federal Boobie Inspector” on the front. So you name your episode after that because it’s really clever especially when one of the characters in the episode used to be an FBI agent and he really is a boob.

Ray Donovan: the girl on the skateboard with the FBI tee shirt

But before we get into all that, first congratulations are in order to Liev Schreiber, Jon Voigt, David Hollander and Hank Azaria on their 2016 Emmy nominations.

Azaria was back in this episode (7-17-16) in his recurring role of Ed Cochran, once on track to be the head of the FBI and now reduced to drinking cheap tequila and singing karaoke in a dive. Ray had to get in contact with him after all his other efforts to get Ivan Belikov out of jail went south.

Jacob Waller, Kovitsky’s attorney, suggested to Ray that he get Belikov released by turning himself in, since Ray is the real murderer of the Armenians (or one of them anyway). Ray had District Attorney Jackson Holt under surveillance. with Lena watching his every move, or should we say movement? Ray paid a visit to Deb Goldman to get his hands on stuff in the safe of the late Ezra Goldman. There he found a taped confession of murder from Mr. Price, a movie star who is now an old man. Ray knows that Price has influence with Jackson Holt. Ray wants Price to convince Holt to drop the charges against Belikov. Price agrees to do so, but when he meets with Holt, he instead confesses to the murder of his wife. And that leaves Ray with the option Avi suggested– getting rid of Sonia Kovitsky permanently. He tells Avi to take care of that, but then he bumps into the skater girl and her shirt reminds him of Ed Cochran and the hit on Kovitsky is off.

Mickey Donovan, in the meantime, has made his way back to Los Angeles by accepting a ride with an old redheaded woman who thinks Mickey looks like Paul Newman. Can you believe it? This old woman drives Mickey to a deserted place, while singing “Plastic Jesus” from “Cool Hand Luke.”

She puts the moves on him. Mickey has to play ball or get out of the vehicle. Afterwards, she takes him all the way to the door of the Fite Club, gives him her phone number and tells him he can call her anytime.

Mickey runs into Darryl first and claims he came back to see his new granddaughter, but wastes no time trying to ring Darryl and Bunchy into helping him get the $4 million horseshoe back. Ray eventually gets wind of all this and by that time, he needs that $4 million pretty bad. For one thing, he promised to pay Ed Cochran $2 million to give him some information that will give Ray some pull with Jackson Holt. Cochran wanted the special Ray Donovan $5 million price, but he settled for $2 mil with this down payment: Ray had to sing Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight” at the karaoke club. (Man! That was weird. We thought Ray had more soul than that. Remember “Walk This Way”?) Mickey could not believe his good fortune. Ray’s help is worth more than all his other sons combined!

Federal Boobie Inspector Guest Stars and Co-Stars

Additional storylines in this episode (there were many):

Hector was back in Marisol’s clutches. She gets a hold of Ray when Hector nearly croaks from an apparent overdose of whatever drugs they were doing. Marisol is all “thank you, thank you” when Ray revives him but then she goes back into her normal jaded personality, accusing Ray of having a crush on her little brother. “Why do you have to poison everything,” Hector asks her forlornly after Ray leaves.

Abby is in denial about her breast cancer diagnosis, claiming that the doctor is wrong or worse. He just made up the results to make some money off them. Shanty Irish reasoning at its best. Ray gets Lena to bring her ex-girlfriend (a breast cancer oncologist) to talk some sense into Abby.

Bunchy hurt Terry’s feelings when he asked Ray to be baby Maria’s godfather. Bunchy said that he could get hit by a bus or Teresa could get cancer. Teresa was angry that he took it upon himself to pick the godparents without consulting her. She wants to move back to Bakersfield to be with her own people.

Terry went out looking for Damon and found him selling loosies for $1 each by following his girlfriend, Shairee. He brought Damon back to the Fite Club to spar with Daryll.
