Randy Travis Sorry After Arrest

Published on February 6, 2012 by name team   ·   No Comments

Country singer and actor Randy Travis was arrested in Sanger, TX and charged with public intoxication, after the officer who was checking him out told him to step out of his car so he could be in public and be arrested for public intoxication. This is something they like to do, you know. If you are drunk in your own house, they will tell you to step outside for a moment .. bingo, you are now drunk in public.

Of course, it could have been worse for Randy, he could have gotten charged with DUI, at least in some jurisdictions. If they find you drunk in a car and no one else is around, that’s pretty much it because they can presume (and more times than not, it’s absolutely true) that you were already drunk when you drove yourself there.

According to the Denton Record-Chronicle, an officer on patrol (Carl Parker, according to the police report TMZ obtained) investigated what he thought was a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church. In a parked 1998 Pontiac, he found the Grammy award-winning singer behind the wheel, stinking of spirits, with a wine bottle close at hand in the passenger seat. Travis had a tough time explaining himself to the officer and finding his i.d. and didn’t even seem to know here he was. The officer called for backup and when that arrived, they asked Travis to get out of the car and placed him under arrest.

A spokesman for the Denton County Sheriff said officers must jail intoxicated people who might harm themselves or someone else and keep them at least four hours for their own protection. That is true, according to the Austin DWI Lawyer’s blog, where it also points out that the standard for public drunkenness is subjective, as opposed to an objective standard for DWI.

Despite having told the officer he had had a fight with his girlfriend, Travis offered an alternative explanation after being released from jail. In a public apology provided to TheWrap, he said: “I apologize for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl. I’m committed to being responsible and accountable, and apologize for my actions.” Maybe they root for different teams.
