Everyone is interested in learning about the Prohibition Era now that Boardwalk Empire’s 2nd season has begun. Jeopardy! even had a Prohibition category tonight. How would you have done? Here are the clues:
$200 – The scene for Prohibition is set with the 1829 inauguration party for this President. It moved outside … to drunken revelry.
$400 – After alcohol was made illegal in Maine, vendors offered swigs from concealed pints in their pants & got this nickname
$600 – It was not illegal to make wine for home use. Beer was a no-no under this act that accompanied Prohibition.
$800 – The St. Louis brewery — er, former brewery — headed by this man did just fine as a maker of malt extract.
$1000 – This “Little Flower” NY Rep. (& later mayor) believed that God would disapprove of Prohibition.
For the $1000 question, they played the first part of this youtube to help the contestants identify the politican (in case the “Little Flower” clue was insufficient):
:
The contestant who rung in first got it right: Who is Fiorello LaGuardia? “He looked a lot like Lou Costello, didn’t he?” Alex Trebek said. Actually, at least in the part they played on Jeopardy! show, he even sounded like Lou Costello!
Here are the rest of the answers:
$200 answer: Who is Andrew Jackson?
$400 answer: What are bootleggers?
$600 answer: What is the Volstead Act?
$800 answer: Who is Busch? (The contestant didn’t have to know if it was Adolphus or August).
There was no Daily Double in the category.
College counselor and quiz bowl coach, Chris Fleitas, kicked butt, bringing his total winning to over $84,000, we think (we didn’t tape it). The middle contestant managed to get close to Chris with a bold Daily Double win, but he blew Final Jeopardy and Chris didn’t.
