Matt Cain pitched 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball and the Giants bats exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning as the San Francisco Giants beat the Texas Rangers in Game 2 of the World Series. The Giants took a 2-0 lead in the series, and the shell shocked Rangers will get a chance to regroup as the series moves to Texas for Game 3 October 30th.
The Rangers’ Ian Kinsler hit a deep fly ball to centerfield in the fifth inning that looked like a sure home run. But the ball bounced off the top of the wall – and back in to play for a double instead of a home run. When that type of thing happens, it usually means it’s not going to be your day.
Matt Cain and the Giants bullpen shut down the Rangers offense, allowing just 4 hits. Cain now has not allowed an earned run in 21 1/3 post season innings this year.
Giants’ shortstop Edgar Renteria was 2-4 with three runs batted in. His fifth inning solo home run was all the Giants would need. Renteria thrives in the World Series, and has a .321 batting average in his three World Series with the Giants, Cardinals, and Marlins. He drove in the winning run in the 11th inning of Game 7 of the 1997 World Series to win the series for the Florida Marlins over the Cleveland Indians.
Games 3, 4, and if the Rangers win one of those, Game 5 will be played at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Even if the Rangers were to sweep those three games, the series returns to San Francisco after that, something that is a big obstacle. With the two losses, the Texas Rangers are now 0-11 all time at AT&T Park.
