Marriage and Hunting Supporting Cast: Boardwalk Empire

Here are some of the actors who appeared in Episode 9 (Marriage and Hunting) of Boardwalk Empire, Season 4

All the dead bodies turned up in Chicago in this episode. This was the last appearance of Aaron Shiver in the role of Dean O’Banion. The death of O’Banion was pushed up quite a few months, since factually, Charles Dean O’Banion was murdered in his florist shop on November 10, 1924. Shiver was great in the role of the “always jocular” Irish gangster. In the scene right before the murder where Nelson Van Alden (Michael Shannon) snaps and tells O’Banion who he really is and what’s he really done, you can see the wheels turning – O’Banion means to figure out an advantage from this revelation. But he never gets the chance. Enter Frankie Yale (Joseph Riccobene) and two gunmen (historically, John Scalise and Albert Anselmi). Just like in real life, Frankie Yale shakes O’Banion’s hand but he didn’t throw a chrysanthemum on Deanie after the shooting. They actually shot O’Banion in the back of the head after he fell face down.

Three of the murders Van Alden reveals to O’Banion were so recent, he had to step over the corpses on his way out after his boss got clipped. Phil (Ryan Woodle),was an employee at the Faraday Electric Iron Company who thought it was really funny to make fun of social misfit, Nelson Van Alden, working there as George Mueller; that is, until it pushed Van Alden over the edge and he attacked Phil with a hot iron to the face. In this episode, Phil spots Mueller in O’Banion’s flower shop and returns with a blackjack and backup in the form of former manager, Scotty Gulliver (John Harrington Bland) and Ralph (Mike Houston). They all attack Mueller, unaware that he is armed with a loaded weapon he means to kill Dean O’Banion with. Big mistake! Fatal, even.

Surya Botofasina plays Mr. Coates, Daughter Maitland’s (Margot Bingham) piano player. Up til now, we thought his name was Mr. Colson, but Chalky White’s (Michael Kenneth Williams) daughter, Maybelle (Christina Jackson) clearly called him Mr. Coates in this episode. We learned that Mr. Coates sometimes plays another role in Daughter’s life: nursemaid after Valentin Narcisse (Jeffrey Wright) beats unmercifully on that poor child.

MIA: Did you notice that Gillian Darmody (Gretchen Mol) was not being represented by her usual attorney Leander Whitlock (Dominic Chianese) at the custody hearing for Tommy Darmody? Judge Varick (Robert Emmett Lunney) was also off the case. The new judge was played by Tom Kemp. He called Gillian’s attorney Mr. Ferry. We think he was played by Tom Sorenson. Anybody know for sure?
