Marisol Recap: Ray Donovan

We learned in the Season 4 premiere that Marisol is the half-sister of Hector Campos, the middle-weight champion of the world. Hector’s sticky situation with Marisol led to Ray framing a cop for drunk driving and getting drunk himself, something he had not done for at least 6 months.

“Marisol” opens at a television studio where she is about to go public and spill the beans that she and her half-brother have been lovers for a long time. They are already announcing upcoming shocking revelations about Hector on the air. Detective Muncie is, in fact, listening to a news report about it in her car while driving back to L.A. with Mickey Donovan in custody in the backseat. “Probably likes wearing women’s panties,” Muncie says, “Big bleeping deal,” and turns the radio off. Mickey wants to know where they’re going. “Disneyland,” she says.

Ray Donovan pulls up to Hector’s mansion where the media and paparazzi are staked outside. Inside Hector hands Ray a press release and explains how his people want to handle Marisol. He is supposed to talk about her drug problems and prostitution busts and say he threatened to cut her off financially, painting Marisol as a lying junkie ho out for revenge. Ray knows that Marisol is not lying so he doesn’t want to do it. Hector says he was only 13 years old when 25-year-old Marisol preyed upon him after the priest who molested him went to prison. That makes it child abuse and Ray gets on board.

At the Donovans, Darryl, Terry and Conor are also watching breaking Marisol news. Terry speculates that Hector is “probably queer.” Darryl bets $10 that it’s a sex change. Conor thought Marisol was hot. The picture they were showing of her was anyway. If Conor ever gets to see how old and strung out she is, he’ll recant.

At the TV studio, Lena shows up and locates Marisol in the studio. With a story about redoing her sound wiring, she leads Marisol to Ray. Marisol gives Lena a bloody nose and flees. Ray overtook her and got a few swift kicks in the shins before Lena took the banshee down with a stun gun. “You didn’t have to do that,” Ray said. Lena replied: “Yeah, I did.”

Ray took Marisol to a meeting with Hector and his managers. Marisol is offered a $25,000 stipend per month to stop her crazy efforts to destroy her brother’s career. “Is that what you want?” she is asked, “To ruin the only source of income you have?” Marisol can’t believe that this is what Hector really wants. “Little man,” she says, “It has always been you and me. Hasn’t it? When the truth would come calling. You and me.” She begs him to tell her what he wants. Hector wants her to take the money and go to rehab. His manager says it’s up to her: the money or Ray Donovan.

Let us just say that Marisol is one messed up piece of work as a result of being abused herself. Just about everything that comes out of her mouth is exceedingly sordid and she translates everything that is said to her the same way. Ray took her to his office and put Lena in charge of watching her after Avi called and advised that Muncie had Mickey and he was going to rat them out on the Minassian shoot-out.

Marisol Guest Stars and Co-Stars

Springing Mickey
At the police station, Det. Muncie brought Mickey some chow. He called her “a nurturer” and claimed she couldn’t have missed his attraction to her. Muncie ignored Mickey but he peppered her with questions about her daughter after seeing a photo on the wall. Muncie told him that her daughter passed away so he would stop asking about her, but Mickey continued to try to create rapport by bringing up his dead daughter, Bridget. Didn’t work.

Ray told Muncie that he needed one day to deliver Belikov to her in exchange for Mickey. He went to a steam bath where he met up with Belikov who knew about Marisol, too. Belikov thought all Marisol knew was that Hector is a doper. “They all dope anyway,” he said. Ray walked Belikov to his car, grabbed him from behind, shot him full of ketamine and stuffed him in the trunk.

Avi did not want to give Ray the weapons that were used to take out the Armenians but Ray ingeniously took Belikov to Avi’s mother house and sent Avi a pic showing Belikov in the basement. Avi gave him the weapons. After getting Belikov’s prints all over the gun, Ray made the swap with Muncie who told him to make sure she never saw Mickey again. As Mickey and Ray left, a sinister Russian at a donut truck eyed them up.

Father Romero Bows Out
The priest went to see Ray at his office. He knew all about the police officer at the motel. He also figured out that Ray abducted Marisol. Father Romero urged Ray to come to confession. All Hector needs to do is forgive Marisol like he forgave his priest, according to Romero. Ray told Romero that the priest was shielding abusers from the consequences of their actions but the priest said if Ray can’t see the trail of broken souls he is leaving in his wake, he can’t help him.

Abby’s Purse
Conor was still going on about how hot Marisol was when the Donovans arrived at the Fite Club. As Terry and Abby cleaned up some stuff Bunchy was supposed to take care of, a kid came out of nowhere and snatched Abby’s very expensive Chloe purse. Terry tracked him down to “the alley off Sixth.” The kid punched hard Terry several times in the face, grabbed her purse again and ran off. Later, Terry went looking for the purse and lo! and behold, he found a young girl walking down the street with it. They leaned on the girl to give up the kid, whose name is Damon. Abby got her stuff back and Terry wanted Damon to become a boxer. This incident also introduced a cop named Maureen Dougherty that may prove to be a new love interest for Terry.

In the end, Ray put Mickey on a bus back to Las Vegas. Mickey told him about the sure thing with the $4 million in the green horseshoe at the casino in Primm. Marisol managed to get away from Ray by jumping out of his moving vehicle. She sent Hector texts saying she was going to kill herself. Hector ended up getting his butt kicked by his opponent in the big $55 million fight.
