Johnny Cueto Throws Shutout for 1st Win as a Royal

The Kansas City Royals acquired flame throwing right hander Johnny Cueto from the Cincinnati Reds prior to the trading deadline to add some depth to the starting rotation. Cueto allowed three runs in six innings against Toronto July 31st in his Royals debut, and then took the loss when the Kansas City bats couldn’t help him out in a loss at Detroit where he allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings pitched on August 5th.

It all came together on August 10th when Cueto made his Royals home debut. He pitched a four hit, no walk, eight strikeout complete game against Detroit for his first win as a Royal.

The victory, plus a loss by the Minnesota Twins, increased Kansas City’s lead in the A.L Central to 12 games. The Royals have the best record in the American League at 67-44 and have the second best record in the majors behind that team across the state on I-70, the St. Louis Cardinals.
