San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey is out for the season with a leg injury following a collision at the plate with the Florida Marlins’Scott Cousins in a game May 25th. Posey told reporters on May 27th that his season “likely” is over.
Posey was the National League 2010 Rookie of the Year, and played an important role in the Giants World Series championship season. He said he felt Cousins could have slid around him but agreed the play was legal. San Francisco Giants general manager Brian Sabean proposed that Baseball change the rules and require sliding into home instead of allowing collisions there, pointing out that collisions of that type are not allowed at the other bases. Sabean is concerned that the size and strength of today’s players could lead to even more serious injuries.
While collisions can be exciting, Posey is not the first to suffer a significant injury because of such contact. One of the better examples of this is the collision between the Cincinatti Reds’ Pete Rose and Cleveland Indians catcher Ray Fosse in the 1970 All Star Game. Rose was an aggressive base runner during his career and this All Star game was no exception. Rose smashed headlong into Fosse knocking him off the plate. Fosse was injured on the play and was never the same after that.
