Gandhi: 1982 Best Picture

“Gandhi” won 8 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, at the 55th Academy Awards. Not bad at all out of 11 nominations. “Tootsie” had 10 nomination and only Jessica Lange won for Best Supporting Actress.

Coincidentally, Meryl Streep won her first Best Actress Oscar for “Sophie’s Choice”. She already had a Best Supporting Actress Oscar from 1979 for “Kramer vs. Kramer”, remember? That was also a Dustin Hoffman no lead actress movie. Lange was also nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her performance as Frances Farmer in “Frances”.

Here are the other films honored with multiple Oscar nominations: “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial” (9), “Victor/Victoria” (7), Das Boot (6), “An Officer and a Gentleman” (6), “Sophie’s Choice” (5), “The Verdict” (5), “Missing” (4) and “Poltergeist” (3). “Annie”, “Blade Runner”, “Frances”, “La Traviata”, “Tron” and “The World According to Garp” all got 2 nominations.

Box office hits from 1982 with no Oscar noms: “Rocky III”, “Porky’s”, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” and “48 Hrs.”
