Flowers in the Attic (2014)

We actually found Lifetime’s 2014 remake of Flowers in the Attic to be better than the original 1987 film. Mainly, it followed the book better, not that we recall the book exactly — that happens, you know. You read the book, you watch the film version. In some ways, the two get mixed up in your mind after a while. But you don’t forget that one big difference between the book and the 1987 film — Corrine Foxworth Dollanganger (Victoria Tennant) died in the 1987 film.

Not so in the remake and the word is that the sequel, “Petals On the Wind.” is already in the works. Now that’s one good reason to like it right there, though hardly the only one.

Kiernan Shipka and Mason Dye turn in excellent performances as Cathy and Chris.

As for the twins, dang if that little girl didn’t look too much like Cindy Brady. The little boy didn’t really get as much to say in this one as the first version.

We found Ellen Burstyn just a little less foreboding as the grandmother than Louise Fletcher. That was because they showed some weaknesses in the grandmother in this one, and we don’t recall that in the 1987 film.
