The Final Jeopardy question (9/27/2016) in the category “21st Century Music” was:

The title of a Frida Kahlo painting inspired the 3-word name of this 2008 No. 1 hit by a British group.

6x champ Seth Wilson scored another victory yesterday and brought his winnings up to $153,700. Today he takes on these two players: Bing Kao, from Houston, TX; and Miranda Prince, from Albany, OR.

Bing found the last Daily Double in “Archipelagos” under the $1,600 clue with only the $2,000 clue in that category left after it (and we didn’t get to see it). He was in third place with $8,000 now, $7,800 less than Seth’s lead. He bet $1,200 and thought it was The Falklands. That was WRONG.

Seth finished in the lead with $15,800. Miranda was next with $9,100 and Bing was in third place with $6,800.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “VIVA LA VIDA”?

Coldplay had its first No. 1 single with “Viva la Vida” in both the UK and USA. “Viva La Vida” was also the “Song of the Year” at the 2009 Grammy Awards in 2009. The song’s title was taken directly from Frida Kahlo’s inscription on her painting of watermelons (sandias, in Spanish) near the end of her life. The cover art, however, is from French artist Eugène Delacroix. For more on the reasons for these choices, see Legmenon.com (Coldplay, Delacroix & Frida Kahlo Watermelons)

Here’s a link to a video of “Viva la Vida” with lyrics.

Bing came up with “Ice Ice Baby,” a 1990 No. 1 hit for Vanilla Ice. He lost his $6,601 bet and had $199 left.

Miranda got it right. She bet $1,500. That brought her up to $10,600.

Seth tried “Shake It Off.” (Taylor Swift, 2015?) He lost his $3,000 bet, leaving him with $12,800. That won him his 7th match and brought his total haul up to $166,500.

This was the $2000 clue in the Album Cover Art category in the 7-24-2012 game LINK

This band’s “Viva la Vida” featured Delacroix’ 1830 painting “Liberty Leading the People”

congrats seth on his 7th game win. Although he could have bet zero and still would have remained champion. Still seth was lucky and smart too. Honestly i could see him going to tie with buzzy cohen soon.

  3. Leena says:

If Miranda had wagered more, she would’ve surely won. Seth sure is a smarty, but some of his wins are lucky, like today. Second of all, ICE ICE BABY!? The clue says 2008, not 1990 or 2015, for Shake it Off. Still, I give my congratulations to Seth and the contestants for doing well.

    • VJ says:

Agreed, Leena, Seth sure was lucky today that Miranda was a timid bettor and that his bet was small, too.

I guess Seth and Bing just wrote down what they did to have something — it wasn’t just the years of the songs — they are by solo American artists

      • Marilyn Ahrenhoerster says:

You are polite, VJ. Her bet was useless! If Bing had been correct,he would have won. Miranda’s math skills were lacking.

        • VJ says:

@Marilyn, Well, when she got that first round DD, she could have bet the $1,000 allowance but I thought she was afraid to, that’s why I said she was timid about betting. She gave Seth a big hand on the win so she was a good sport about her misstep, too, and she was very happy that she got FJ right.

@everyone, I have 11 more clues from the match up now.

        • EricS says:

Indeed Marilyn. Why learn remedial game theory when there is Coldplay?

Seth has now won more money than Buzzy (9x champ) but in fewer games (7x champ). Awesome! The only one left to surpass is Pau on the TOC list by way of total money won.

    Congrats Seth!
