Final Jeopardy: Opera (9-22-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (9/22/2016) in the category “Opera” was:

The heroine of this opera sings, “If you come to give me, so cruel, your last goodbye, the dark vortex of the Nile will be my grave”

3x champ Seth Wilson continued his winning ways yesterday. He has now won $83,800. Today he is up against these two players: Ryan Mill, from Ottawa, ON, Canada; and Kellyn Johnson, from Tempe, AZ.

Round 1 Categories: Word Puzzles, Antiques, Math Hysteria, Annual Events, Stars & Causes, Inquisitive Writers

Seth found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Inquisitive Writers” under the $400 clue on the 9th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $2,600, $1,800 more than Kellyn in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

R.L. Stevenson wrote, “I had gone to bed” this man, “I had awakened this other man. “How was this to be explained?”  show

Seth finished in the lead with $8,400. Kellyn was second with $3,400 and Ryan was last with $2,800.

Round 2 Categories: It’s Raining Mensa, TV Show Openings, Mythology, Polynesia, A Silent “B” Hive, Acquisitive Presidents

Seth found the first Daily Double in “Acquisitive Presidents” under the $1,200 clue. Two categories and 2 clues were still on the board. In the lead with a runaway $22,000, he had $19,000 more than Kellyn in second place. He bet $2,000 and thought it was Kennedy. That was WRONG.

Seth found the last Daily Double in “Silent ‘B’ Hive” under the $2,000 clue. Only the “Polynesia” category was left after it. He was in the lead with $24,000 now. He bet $2,000 again and took a guess with limb. WRONG again.

Seth finished with an unbeatable $22,000. Ryan was next with $5,600 and Kellyn was in third place with $4,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “AIDA”?

Vivian Grant has the original Italian lyrics and an English translation of the “O patria mia” aria from “Aida” on her porttowngirl blog, with the exact wording in the clue. There’s also a video of Leontyne Price’s performance. The English lyrics on the video render the lines this way: “Perhaps, cruel man, you are coming to bid me a final farewell. Then, in the dark whirlpool of the Nile, I shall find death.”

Kellyn got it right. She bet $3,500 and finished with $8,100.

Ryan also got it. His $3,601 bet landed him in second place with $9,201.

Seth thought it was “Antony and Cleopatra.” He didn’t bet anything so he won the match with $22,000. His 4-day total is $105,800.

Congrats to seth on his 4th game win. Go seth. I wonder if he had surpassed tim kutzs 100000 win already? Also vj are you a fan of verdi opera?

    • VJ says:

Tim Kutz is still ahead with $107K even. I will put Seth on the ToC list tomorrow, win or lose.

I’m not a big opera lover, Lou. I love Rock & Roll (Happy birthday to Joan Jett), folk songs (particulary sea shanties) and standards

Lol. Just to think I thought this fj clue would be in the champ’s wheelhouse. He fooled me by wagering zero & giving an incorrect response. But that’s okay Seth you had a runaway game and a big congratulations on becoming a 4x champ.

This guy knows how to play this game. Go Seth go!

    • VJ says:

yeah, wow, he truly dominated that game, even with missing the second round DDs. I was saying the gods have decreed that Seth isn’t going over $22K on this one. LOL.

Speaking of gods, I’ve got the Mythology category up over here, as well as 6 more triple stumpers.

Alex got such a kick out of the Polynesian leaders that no one wanted to ring in on. There is a word to exactly describe his delivery of the answer. Unfortunately, I can’t think of it. ha ha ha !!!

I’m so excited for these next few days. I’m sure that Seth will perform well. Who knows, he might even get 10 or more wins! I can really see the potential in him!
