Final Jeopardy: European Capitals (9-16-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (9/16/2014), in the category “European Capitals” was:

At 200 miles, this capital of just over a million people is the continental capital closest to London.

New champ Elizabeth Williams won $12,800 yesterday in the Season 31 debut. Today she is up against these two players: Tessa Fleming, from Mission Viejo, CA; and Bill Cossen, originally from Lexington, SC.

Round 1: Bill found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Plastic Surgery” under the $800 clue. He was in the lead with $4,000 when he found it, but was then docked $1,200 for leaving an “s” off a prior answer. The $2,800 he had left was still $600 more than Elizabeth in second place. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

This alliterative procedure is also called abdominoplasty. show

Bill finished in the lead with $5,800. Elizabeth was second with $3,200 and Tessa was last with $800.

Round 2: Elizabeth found the first Daily Double in “Word Origins” under the $1,200 clue. She was in second place with $5.600, $5,000 less than Bill’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and said “double speak.” Close but WRONG. Was the “Boo Hiss” necessary, Alex?

It was coined by George Orwell & means the capacity to accept 2 contradictory ideas at the same time. show

Elizabeth got the last Daily Double, the last clue on the board in “African History” under the $2,000 clue. In third place with $2,400, she had $12,600 less than Bill’s lead. She made a conservative bet of $1,000 this time but didn’t have a guess so she was WRONG.

This capital of South Africa’s northern cape was founded after an 1871 diamond find; today it’s a name for baby girls. show

Bill had the game in the bag with $15,000. Tessa was next with $2,800 and Elizabeth was in third place with $1,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS BRUSSELS?

Brussels and Paris are the closest continental capitals to London with Brussels being a little bit closer. Even so, the population of Paris is about 10x greater than Brussels. Seemed like they added “continental” to the clue to exclude Cardiff, Wales, but just the million population figure would have excluded it. Elizabeth got it right. Her $1,200 bet brought her up to $2,600.

Tessa also got it right. She bet nothing and remained at $2,800.

FJ 9-16-14

Bill wrote down Amsterdam. He also bet nothing so he won the game with $15,000 and is the second champ of the week.

Bill Cossen is a Ph.D candidate in history. In the chat, he talked articles he had already written on American Catholicism and mentioned that he would someday love to write a serious history on professional wrestling.

2 years ago:: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “Historic Firsts”

On July 31, 1971 Air Force Colonel David Scott became the first person to drive one of these. show

I would have gotten final Jeopardy wrong, guessing The Hague. It is closer than Brussels to London, and has been the seat of government for the Netherlands since 1588. However the Netherlands’ capital is technically Amsterdam. Benin, Bolivia, Georgia, Taiwan, and Côte d’Ivoire are the only other nations whose capitals are not also the seat of government.
