Final Jeopardy: Global Organizations (9-15-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/15/2017) in the category “Global Organizations” was:

“Connecting police for a safer world” is the motto of this 190-member organization.

New champ Ellen Wernecke won $6,500 yesterday and, yeah, you know what low wins like that mean. No one got FJ, but she was the one who got to come back for a chance to increase her winnings. Her opponents in her second game are: Julien Corven, from Parkville, MD; and Sarah Reisert, from Devon, PA.

Round 1 Categories: The Vietnam War – Animated Felines – Government Folks With 2 First Names? – Homophonic Pairs – Seas – Stock Symbols on the Dow

Julien found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Government Folks” under the $400 clue on the 6th pick of the round. He was in a second place tie with Sarah. They both had $400, $600 less than Ellen’s lead. He bet $800 (??!) of the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS INTERPOL?

From wikipedia: “Contrary to frequent portrayals in popular culture, Interpol is not a supranational law enforcement agency and has no agents who are allowed to make arrests. Instead, it is an international organization that functions as a network of criminal law enforcement agencies from different countries. The organization thus functions as an administrative liaison among the law enforcement agencies of the member countries, providing communications and database assistance, assisted via the central headquarters in Lyon, France.” You can see its motto in the box on the righthand side of that page.

I always understood that INTERPOL was primarily an information sharing organization. Taiwan is not now a member because of the opposition of China.
Also the current presidency is held by China, which is not in Taiwan’s interest. I remember that the Iron Curtain countries used to use INTERPOL to track down those opposed to their Communist governments, so their memberships were suspended in those days. During WWII the presidency was held by Germany. At times the organization has always been very political. Apparently it still is. It’s good to begin a season.

I guess Ellen’s total was amazing when you think of all the triple stumpers in this game. She wouldn’t have had a runaway though if Sarah had made a bolder bet on her DD.

And also if Sarah took a stab on the last clue of Double Jeopardy.

      • VJ says:

No one would take a stab at that clue unless they “K”new it.

By the way, on that Homophonic Pairs writing paper clue, in school, the hint we were taught to remember the difference was “e” for letter and “a” for stand

        • rhonda says:

They probably didn’t even know what stationery is, how many people actually write letters anymore? I remember my dad teaching me the difference between the 2, he told me the “a” was for table.

        • VJ says:

LOL, Rhonda. I’m so guilty of neglecting letter writing myself and I used to love sending letters on different kinds of stationery, and also giving pretty sets as gifts.

        • rhonda says:

Same here, VJ, on both counts.

  3. Lou says:

Well, at least Ellen made a comeback today and betting a small amount to win the game. Interpol can take down crime organizations, but are they able to take down terror organizations though, VJ? The fraternal order of police handles donations but what are their responsibilities as an organization though, primarily?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, The Fraternal Order of Police isn’t a global organization, it’s a national one here in the USA. It’s like a union, I guess. The slogan on their website is “The Voice of Our Nation’s Law Enforcement Officers”
