Final Jeopardy: Small Countries (7-5-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/5/2017) in the category “Small Countries” was:

This tiny island nation 700 miles northeast of Madagascar makes a great addition to a classic tongue twister.

3x champ Jon Eisenman had a runaway game yesterday and now, he’s up to $64,300 in winnings. In his 4th game, he is up against these two players: Chloë Zung, from Armonk, NY; and Sebastian Davis, from Los Angeles, CA.

Chloë found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Olympic City” under the $1,000 clue, with 3 clues worth $800 left after it. She was in second place with $3,000, $600 less than Sebastian’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

Round 2 Categories: Bear With Us – Classic Movies – Medals & Decorations – Literary Spoiler Alert! – I Ruled in Britain for 50+ Years – Same Consonant Words

Jon found the first Daily Double in “Literary Spoiler Alert!” under the $1,600 clue on the 14th pick. He was in second place with $8,600 at this point, $400 behind Chloë’s lead. He bet $2,000 and took a shot with “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” That was WRONG.

5 clues later, Sebastian found the last Daily Double in “Ruled in Britain” under the $1,600 clue. In third place with $6,200, he had $5,800 less than Chloë’s lead. He bet $1,000 and took a guess with 2007. That was WRONG.

Jon finished in the lead with $11,000. Chloë was next with $9,000 and Sebastian was in third place with $8,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS SEYCHELLES?

There are 3 little island nations in the Indian Ocean around Madagascar: Comoros to the northwest, Mauritius to the east and Seychelles to the northeast. Besides the northeast thing, Seychelles is the only one that would fit in the well-known tongue-twister: She sells seashells down by the seashore.

Sebastian got it right, after crossing out Mauritius. His misspelling “Scychelles” was accepted. We don’t presume to know exactly why. A slip of the pen, perhaps? His $4,000 bet brought him up to $12,000.

Chloë thought it was Kiribati. She lost her $7,027 bet and had $1,973 left.

Jon also got it. He bet $7,001 and won this one with $18,001. His 4-day total is $82,301 and he gets a spot on the ToC list.

Oh by the way VJ, do you remember that tongue twister she sells seashells by the seashore? I think instead of seashells they used Seychelles as part of the tongue twister. Pretty funny I tell you. That first round was very tough for the contestants especially when Jon was in the red for a little bit. But he made a comeback in the second round. good for him, I hope he wins again tomorrow, fingers crossed.

    • VJ says:

Yeah, I put it in the recap the way my mom used to say it “down by the seashore.”

I really didn’t think tongue twisters were fun when I was a kid. I mean, my parents obviously knew we couldn’t say the seashells one or “toy boat” or “rubber baby buggy bumpers” 5x fast so I didn’t see what the point of it all was. heh heh heh

  2. Lou says:

Congrats to Jon on winning his fourth game. His total is similar to Todd Giese’s four game win, but did Todd win a little bit more or less than Jon did, VJ?

So far here are the stats:
May 2015: Alex Jacob 6x winner (Total for his six game win, VJ?)
June 2015, Dan Feitel and Brennan Bushee 5x winners of 100000 dollars
    July 2015: Scott Lord 5x winner 100000

April 2016: Andrew Pau 6x winner 170000 dollars

    May 2016 Buzzy Cohen 9x winner, 180000
    June 2016 Hunter Appler: 6x winner 145000
    July 2016 Pranjal Vachaspati: 6x winner: 130000

    April 2017 Alan Lin: 6x winner 123000
    May 2017 Dave Clemmons: 100000
    July 2017: Jon Eisenman 4x winner 82000

June 2017 was a tough month for anyone to win more than 3 games because after Rob Ligouri won in March we waited six weeks and from mid May to early July, it was six weeks

@Lou, everyone from 2015 has already been in a tournament so I’m not seeing any reason to compare their winnings to this season?

LINK: 10 more clues from this match. I think Popeye’s baby was the most surprising to me out of that, King of the Road (a close second) and the Natalie Wood/Beatty film.

      • Lou says:

Yeah that one surprised me as well I am a huge fan of Popeye but I can’t believe the contestant mistook it for peewee herman. I’m betting none of them watched Popeye as a little kid though. Do u have anyone that is a fan of Popeye in your family, VJ??

        • Dalton Higbee says:

Alex Jacob competed in April 2015, his winnings were $149,802.

        • VJ says:

Yeah, me. I love the old Popeye cartoons. My grandkids mainly like the musical ones, like Barnacle Bill, Sinbad the Sailor and the Abu Hassan one. .

I don’t think Sebastian mixed up Swee’Pea with Pee Wee Herman though. Probably just took a shot with a name where both syllables rhymed with free.

Not only didn’t they see the cartoons, they didn’t see the Robin Williams movie either. I loved Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl in that, singing that song “He’s Large” about Bluto. 😀

  3. Dalton Higbee says:

    Never heard of Seychelles.
