Final Jeopardy: Great Moments in 19th Century Science (7-30-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/30/2014), in the category “Great Moments in 19th Century Science” was:

Matthias Schleiden found plants are made up of these; at dinner he told Theodor Schwann who said, hey, so are animals.

This week is going by fast! Today’s the last semi-final match of the 2014 Teen Tournament. Two more days of Season 30 left after this match. The last three semi-finalists are: Kat Deabill ($14,400), Sam Lerner, ($20,000), and Alan Koolik, ($31,001).

Round 1: Sam found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “In the Dictionary” under the $800 clue. He was in second place with $3,800, $400 less than Alan’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and came up with “parade”. That was WRONG.

Alan finished in the lead with $7,200. Kat was second with $3,000 and Sam was last with $1,400.

Round 2: Sam found the first Daily Double in “The Law” under the $2,000 clue. He was in third place with $5,000, $12,600 behind Alan’s lead. Sam sheepishly made this one a true Daily Double too. (He’s so cute!). This time, he was RIGHT.

Marbury v. Madison marked the first time that a Federal law had been ruled this 16-letter term. show

Kat found the last Daily Double in “Creative Writers” under the $1,600 clue. In second place with $13,000, she was $4,600 behind Alan’s lead. She bet $2,600 but did not have a guess so she was WRONG.

He created Edmond Dantes but based him on falsely accused Francois Picaud. show

Alan finished in the lead with $19,600. Kat was next with $10,400 and Sam was in third place with $10,000.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE CELLS?

“Matthias Schleiden found that all plants are composed of cells, and communicated the finding to Schwann, who had found similar structures in the cells.

Other researchers confirmed the similarity, as explained in his book, where he concluded, “All living things are composed of cells and cell products. This became the cell theory.” (Preceden.com: Timeline of Contributions to Cell Theory)

Sam, as you probably forecast correctly, bet it all. He finished with $20,000.

Kat bet it all but a dollar. She finished with $20,799.

Alan bet just what he needed to top Kat (if she had bet it all) — $1,201. He won the last semi-final spot with $20,801.

So the three Teen Tournament Finalists for 2014 are:
Cooper Lair, a sophomore from Little Rock, AR – $40,200
Alan Koolik, a junior from Boca Raton, FL – $20,801
Jeff Xie, a junior from Edison, NJ – $20,001

They will compete for the top prize of $75,000 over the next two days. Second place gets $25,000 and third $15,000.

This was such an excellent game. Sam took some big risks and Alan was such a star last night. Kat did better than I expected.

On another topic related to Jeopardy, I had no idea that the announcer for Jeopardy, Johnny Gilbert, was 90 years old. He has some strong pipes.

Congrats Nomi, John, VJ, and me. We all predicted all 3 contestants would get fj correct. Next stop is the final.

I have no favs. Just want to see great competition.

Goin’ out on a limb on that one, eh, Jacob?!

      🙂

    • Nomi says:

Thanks Jacob. Also, I read VJ’s, William’s, and your comments in reply to my post on Monday’s CotD. Couldn’t get around to replying, but much appreciated. It was lovely to read all of your insights, as always.

Well, it looks like it’s set to be a very competitive Final. I’m disappointed that Kat missed out so there isn’t at least one girl in the mix.

In regards to yesterday’s match I thought Joe was the, sort of, jumpy, aggressive player and Cooper seemed more unassuming and pretty calm/cool –pretty good for a baby-faced kid who looked all of about…oh….twelve-ish years old or so.

Based on what I saw yesterday –great match, indeed, as you guys here have attested– I’ll probably be rooting for Cooper the Kid to win this thing.

And yes, Final Jeopardy tonight was a bit too ridiculously easy!

    • jacobska says:

Joe was literally shaking even though he was showing a smile. He was probably thinking “what can I do to get this sophomore off my hide?” But Cooper had no intentions of going anywhere until he won that game. That was a game worthy of being shown again. I recorded it and watched it 5 times already. That was a “shootout at the OK Corral” match. Body language “spoke” volumes.

  5. jacobska says:

VJ, didn’t Alan wager 1,801? You have 1,201. I haven’t seen the game yet. Just going by your recap info. Makes more sense if Kat would have doubled her amount.

    • VJ says:

It was his pre-FJ total I got wrong Jacob. He finished with $19,600. Fixed it.

    • jacobska says:

Disregard my comment above. Alan had 19,600 going into fj. I’m watching it now. He wagered 1,201 as you stated. So much for speed reading on my part.

      • VJ says:

no there’s nothing wrong with your speedreading — I originally had him finishing with 19K.

    • vj says:

And of course, congrats on the FJ prediction.

      • jacobska says:

Thanks. I think it was a unanimous prediction today on CotD. We all agreed it was an easy clue.

      • VJ says:

Here’s hoping they have two challenging clues for the last two days of the season.

  6. john blahuta says:

@vj what did i tell you about alan today….?

    • john blahuta says:

and where on God’s green earth did you dig out that song???? 🙂

    • VJ says:

LOL on the song — it was on youtube and I chose it because of the way the clue was written.

I could not help wishing that Sam got that last DD. I think both he and Alan knew it. Of course, I don’t know but I think it’s safe to say Sam would have gone for the gusto.

Just like Edmond Dantes: “Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do, when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout . . . ‘Do your worst… for I will do mine.'”

      • william k says:

Awesome quote, vj! Did you happen to have that up your sleeve somewhere, or did you dig it up?

        😀

        • VJ says:

This quote is from the Count of Monte Cristo, Bill — the Alexandre Dumas book that Edmond Dantes is in (see last DD), and yes, I did have this one up my sleeve. The quotes on Spoiler Talk, I get from my Daily Cryptogram. Sometimes, I don’t like the quote after I solve the cryptogram so I look up the person and get one I do like.

        • william k says:

As I might have guessed, but you are a wily one, vj.

          😉
