Seth found the last Daily Double in “Lyrics from Broadway” under the $1,200 clue, with just 2 clues left after it. In second place with $14,800, he had $5,800 less than Justin’s lead. He bet $1,400 and didn’t have a response so he was WRONG.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA”?

An 8/28/1952 New York Times review of this Ernest Hemingway work noted that galley proofs were published on that date in Life magazine, in advance of the novel’s publication: “Today you can buy ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ in Life for 20 cents. On Monday, Sept. 8, Scribners will publish it for $3.” Hemingway was very pleased with the arrangement: “… many people will read it who could not afford to buy it. That makes me much happier than to have a Nobel Prize.” The quote in today’s clue is in the review, which points out that “the old man is the very embodiment of dogged courage.” Spencer Tracy was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his work as The Old Man and the Narrator in the 1958 film version. It was one of his 3 Oscar nods in the 1950s. The other 2 were for “Bad Day at Black Rock (1955) and “Father of the Bride” (1950).

Kellie picked “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” a 1955 novel. She didn’t bet anything and remained at $4,400.

Seth tried “The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit,” also published in ’55. He bet $13,000 so he finished with $400.

Justin went with “The Bridges at Toko-Ri,” a 1953 novel. He bet $5,000 this time around and won the game with the $17,000 he had left. His 5-day total is $110,000.

The male lead in the film versions of those novels were Matt Damon, Gregory Peck and William Holden, respectively. Spencer Tracy did not appear in any of them.

@VJ, did you get a chuckle out of the Quebecois response?

    • VJ says:

Not really, mimsy. idk why Trebek let Seth struggle with it. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal. Think of the name Francois– people will say “swa” at the end with or without the cedilla.

Let’s see if Justin can keep the streak going, he needs 13,500 dollars to tie with Alan Lin and another 16000 or so to get to Lisa Schlitt’s total. He has surpassed Tim Aten and Jon Eisenman. But how come none of the contestants knew the Old Man and the Sea? This is one of the most easiest final jeopardy ever. I know you saw a movie and read the book, VJ. Tell me if you have a favorite scene from this movie, please?

    • VJ says:

One of these days, second place is gonna get FJ right and it’s gonna be adios Justin if he keeps betting this way.

I’m not a big Spencer Tracy fan, Lou, although I did see that movie. I also saw a TV movie starring Anthony Quinn as the old man, and I am a big Anthony Quinn fan, so that one is my favorite. One scene that stuck with me is when the boy asks him how big the biggest fish he ever caught was.

      • Lou says:

I see, that was one of the best questions ever out there. Still though, I am betting that Justin is playing like Seth Wilson and Matt Jackson all of sudden since they missed a few final jeopardy questions and betting half their amounts. What was this method called again where contestants bet reasonable amounts when not answering final jeopardy right because like previous contestants Arthur Chu and Julia Collins, they at time bet some big amounts and still win the match,

      • Richard Corliss says:

        Not gonna happen.

  3. Dalton Higbee says:

Last 5 time champion of the season. Hopefully, the ToC Lineup is already set.
