Final Jeopardy: Europe (7-25-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/25/2017) in the category “Europe” was:

Once a feudal state, it has the highest capital city in Europe at an elevation of about 3,300 feet.

3x champ Justin Vossler has now won $72,500. It’s his 4th turn at bat and his challenger are two attorneys: Catherine Meeker, from Orlando, FL; and Mackenzie Brooks, from San Diego, CA.

WHAT IS ANDORRA?

Atlapedia’s fact sheet on Andorra says it is “neither a republic or a monarchy, it is simply the last surviving remnant of the feudal system of medieval Europe.” Its capital city, Andorra La Vella, boasts the highest altitude of any capital city in Europe. Here’s a list of European capitals with altitudes over 1,000 feet (culled from Wikipedia’s list of world capitals by altitude, and not counting Eurasian countries):

3,356 ft – Andorra la Vella, Andorra
2,188 ft – Madrid, Spain
1,900 ft – Sofia, Bulgaria
1,778 ft – Bern, Switzerland
1,699 ft – Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
1,493 ft – Vaduz, Liechtenstein
1,076 ft – San Marino, San Marino

Mackenzie wrote down Austria. He bet and lost it all.

Catherine thought it was Germany. She lost her $12,800 bet and that left her with $1,000.

Justin came up with Liechtenstein. He only lost $4,000 so he won this match with a very healthy $20,300. His 4-day total is $92,800.

Sweet vindication: VJ and Rhonda had the same answers as Mackenzie and Justin… wrong, but not alone!

I must say, I knew a streak was coming when Justin won game 4. We had a five time winner in.early July and now let’s see if Justin can win game 5 tomorrow, I would never have guessed Andorra and I thought of Budapest as my choice as well, how many feet in depth in feet would Hungary have been if,there was a mountain there, VJ?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, the altitude they give for Budapest on that list I linked to is 335 feet, but that’s just the capital city. idk what the Hungarian city with the highest altitude is but the highest mountain in the country is Kékes (3,327 ft)

Todd Giese is now the alternate for the November 2017 TofC. Jboard says it’s taping on September 18 and 19, probably for November sweeps, pre November 23rd to not conflict with Thanksgiving.

  3. Richard Corliss says:

Justin’s 4-Day total beats Todd Giese.
