Final Jeopardy: Websites (7-25-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/25/2014), in the category “Websites” was:

A slang term for Harvard’s freshman register gave this website its name.

It’s the last day of the 2014 Teen Tournament Quarter-Finals. Today’s contestant’s are: Joe Taglic, a senior from Valley Stream, NY; Sydney Mokel, a senior from South Windsor, CT; and Sam Lerner, a sophomore from Indianapolis, IN.

Round 1: Joe found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Around the Body” under the $800 clue before the first break. He was in second place with $400, $2,200 less than Sam’s lead. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Joe finished in the lead with $6,400. Sam was second with $5,800 and Sydney was last with $3,600.

Round 2: Sam found the first Daily Double in “State Capitals” under the $1,600 clue. He was in the lead with $4,600, $1,000 ahead of Joe in second place. He bet $1,400 and guessed Harrisburg, just to avoid saying nothing, but that was WRONG.

Sydney found the last Daily Double in “Bugs” under the $1,600 clue, with one clue left after this. She was in second place with $11,600, $400 less than Joe’s lead. She bet $1,400 and she was RIGHT.

Sydney finished in the lead with $13,000. Joe was next with $12,000 and Sam was in third place with $10,400 after that last $2K clue went to him.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS FACEBOOK?

Facebook’s name “comes from a colloquialism for the directory given to students at some American universities. Facebook was founded on February 4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The founders had initially limited the website’s membership to Harvard students, but later expanded it to colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It gradually added support for students at various other universities and later to their high-school students. Facebook now allows anyone who claims to be at least 13 years old worldwide to become a registered user of the website, although proof is not required. (wikipedia)

The Harvard Yearbook website refers to its Freshman Register as “the Facebook.”

Sam bet $9,600. That brought him up to $20,000.

Joe bet $9,998, finishing with $21,998.

Sydney bet $11,001 bet so she won the last semi-final spot with $24,001.

FJ 7-25-14

With those scores, we’re not saying adios to Sam or Joe by any means. Here are the final results:

Semi-Finalists:
Alan Koolik – $31,001
Sydney Molek – $24,001
Cooper Lair – $20,500
Selena Groh – $20,000

Wild Cards:

In addition to his 1,093 U.S. patents, he held more than 1,200 patents awarded by other countries. show

KWILL I.AM: funny, your call on the hypothetical stay on 16 turned good, but only by an ill-advised (see John B’s many posts, as well as other’s) wager by Kat.
I can’t help but think about a post long ago where you mused about open discussion at parties regarding politics and more. I had hoped to find that, a forum of non-personal intellectual debate, here, and generally have not. In all fairness, it has never been advertised as such. The talks with you have been great, though. So, it is better for me to spend my time elsewhere. If you’re ever in LA at Barney’s Beanery (or really anywhere) and you hear a guy talking about Upstream Color, Stu Ungar, or Jeopardy game theory, ask, if it’s me, you’ll drink for free that night.
I think it’s safe to say the game theory is all yours.
    Later, E.

      Well…speak of the Devil!

Like I said, below, you’d better pop in here on occasion at least, dude.

      Best and warmest regards,

      ~Will

P.S. I hope to hit L.A. down the road in the near-ish future.

      Peace, my friend.

Those are some high scores. Would like to see how they compare to previous teen tournament scores. Off to J Archive.

    Have a good weekend all!

    • VJ says:

Last year’s scores at this point were:

      Semi-Finalists:
      Kelton Ellis – $24,200
      Barrett Block – $24,001
      Leonard Cooper – $20,400
      Nilai Sarda – $18,000
      William Crouch – $10,800

      Wild Card Candidates:
      Joe Vertnik – $20,000
      Tori Amos – $19,600
      Emily Greenberg – $18,200
      Irene Vasquez – $15,000

      • jacobska says:

VJ, thanks. These are the totals I came up with:

        2013 winners: $97,401
        2014 winners: $111, 702

        2013 wild cards: $72,800
        2014 wild cards: $75,398

This year’s semi-finalists totals are definitely higher than last year’s.

Among the 5 winners, the total is $14,301 higher.
Among the 4 wild cards, the total is $2,598 higher.

Last year was when the 3 teen contestants got zero in the same game during the semi-finals. That was unusual.

      • VJ says:

yes, I agree, very unusual. I remember I was kind of rooting for Barrett Block last year. He was just so gung ho, it tickled me.

        • k will says:

It wouldn’t have had anything to do with the fact that he was a handsome young man with Clark Kent glasses and down home, Southern style manners would it, vj?!

In any case, I liked him too and actually liked the mixture of personalities and backgrounds of the three boys, Leonard, Nilai, and Barrett, who made the Final. A memorable group and a memorable tourney for many reasons, I think.

        • VJ says:

LOL, Bill. It never crossed my mind at the time, but he did have Clark Kent appeal.

Barrett was the only one who got all his FJs right in his semi-final and in both final matches. He knew his stuff!

They still have the videos from that season online. When asked (link) if he had any plans for any money he might win, Barrett said he would probably spend it all on liquor and woman and just blow the rest… then he said, just kidding.

        • k will says:

I love that sense of humor! Particularly unexpected comment from such a buttoned-down looking character.

By the way, is eric fixin’ to vamoose from this place soon? His most recent comment (to Nomi) was somewhat cryptic but distinctly predictive that he was hittin’ the road. Hope he’s not running from the law!

          😉

I predict he pops his head in here at least on occasion. He’d better, anyway.

  3. VJ says:

I am hoping that Alan will get a DD, even two next week. He is the only one we have not seen get a DD, and the other were all pretty conservative.

  4. john blahuta says:

rather high amounts for wild cards. kat just made it, but would have been eliminated had alan not bet anything yesterday. then he would be the fourth w.c with 17.600.
but then fj today was a “gimme”, especially in a teen tournament.so sam and joe sort of lucked out, if you will. but that’s the luck – or lack thereof- of the draw.
nevertheless, congrats to all and let’s hope for an exciting semi final and final.

    • john blahuta says:

and ananya would have been the winner with 6.801….

      • john blahuta says:

never mind. alan would have won anyway. nothing would have changed in the wild cards. alan DID take a big risk though. i wonder why? we shall see what his strategy will be in the semis.
        time for the weekend.
        HAVE A GREAT ONE, EVERYBODY!!!!!

    • VJ says:

looking back, I only came up with Ananya who could have beaten Kat’s $14,400 if she stood pat, but if they both stood pat, Kat would be there all the same. (Didn’t count Alan because he won).

      Kat $20,400 – $6,000 = $14,400
      Ananya $15,500 – $8,699 = $6,801

  5. jacobska says:

VJ, thanks. What a fantastic finish. Nice close scores today. Next week will be exciting!

    • VJ says:

Yeah, first triple solve, first game all 3 were so close in score.

Today, my TV went out all of a sudden. It came back but I missed the beginning of the game and the first DD, and had to go upstairs to my backup recording. Next week, I will be recapping from a different location, so I’m hoping that will go smoothly.

  6. VJ says:

Congrats Jacob, a triple solve at last, and congrats to Bill, too, on that. Congrats to Eric for correctly predicting the final Wild Cards.
