Final Jeopardy: Colleges & Universities (7-23-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/23/2015), in the category “Colleges & Universities” was:

The mission of this Western U. founded in 1875 is “to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life.”

3x champ Scott Lord has now amassed $73,401 in winnings. Today he takes on two new challengers: Anne-Marie Masse, from Pierrefonds, Quebec, Canada; and Erin Saelzer, from Oregon, OH.

Round 1: Scott found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “State Seals” under the $800 clue with one more clue remaining. He was in second place with $4,400, $1,600 less than Erin’s lead. He bet $1,600 and he was RIGHT.

Erin finished in the lead with $7,000. Scott was second with $6,000 and Anne-Marie was last with $3,600.

Round 2: Erin found the first Daily Double in “Literary Settings” under the $800 clue. She was in the lead with $10,200, $2,200 more than Scott in second place. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

Erin found the last Daily Double in “Woodrow Wilson’s Fourteen Points” under the $1,200 clue. In the lead with $13,200, she had $5,200 more than Scott in second place. She bet $2,000 and thought it was Hungary. That was WRONG.

Scott finished with a runaway $21,200. Erin was next with $10,000 and Anne-Marie was in third place with $5,200. After the break, Scott was dinged for $1,600 for leaving out a syllable in Maria Sharapova’s name on the last clue* of Round 2 in “Today’s Tennis Stars”. So he no longer had a runaway and went into FJ with $19,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY?

The mission statement given in the clue appears on (BYU’s Mission & Aims page). The University aims “to develop students of faith, intellect, and character who have the skills and the desire to continue learning and to serve others throughout their lives. These are the common aims of all education at BYU. Both those who teach in the classroom and those who direct activities outside the classroom are responsible for contributing to this complete educational vision….”

Anne-Marie wrote down “Cats Rule”. She didn’t lose anything because she didn’t bet anything.

Erin was on the right track but got dinged for writing “Bringham” instead of Brigham. She lost her $5,000 bet, leaving her with the same amount.

Scott got it right by just writing “BYU.” He bet $401 so he won the match with $20,001. His 4-day total is $93,402.

FJ Results: 7-23-15

During the chat, Scott explained how he found out online that Bette Davis and Greta Garbo were prior occupants of his present home– not at the same time. He googled and found that Davis had once owned the property and Garbo lived there as a tenant at a different time.

congrats to scott for his big win.

Scott has surpassed the $65000 won by Elliot Yates as a 4x champ with his winnings today. Nice going Scott. I bet you will never forget Maria Sharapova.

The contestants tonight clearly did not like tennis.

  3. Dalton Higbee says:

So we had two wrong pronunciations by two contestants. Meanwhile, I expected Erin to get her second daily double of the game right and finish with $15,000 or over at the end of the Double Jeopardy! round.

and I expected Scott to bet more on that first DD than just to tie Erin.

      • Cece says:

A friend of mine who was over during the game said that Scott’s voice sounds like Peter Coyote’s. I’m not familiar with PC’s voice. Do they sound alike?

        • VJ says:

idk, Cece. I looked up PC on IMDB since I could not recall the last thing I saw him in and, much to my surprise, he did the voiceover of Dizzy the Cat in The Spoils Before Dying, a miniseries I recently saw.

Then I looked at this youtube where PC is talking about voiceover work. He doesn’t really say much til about the 2 min mark. I’m not hearing him sound like Scott though.

        • Cece says:

VJ, thanks for the leg (um, fingers) work! I hear it a little (but not much) – kinda low, tinged with raspiness voice. Because my friend has a crush on PC and pays very close attention to everything about him, I’ll just take her word for it. :):):)

Ha! Ha! Regarding Final Jeopardy to quote George Gershwin “Life is just a bowl of cherries. Don’t take it serious: Life’s so mysterious.”

    Anne-Marie’s response?

    Congrats Scott!

You must have a sense of humor in order to watch Jeopardy. lol

  5. Eric S says:

So, no runaway and Erin only bet 5000, in essence conceding the game. I’m glad for her that it didn’t matter (oh yeah, other than costing her $1000).

    • Cece says:

I guess Scott’s stars must be all lined up correctly; even though he lost his runaway, Erin made 2 mistakes. Talk about luck!

I was rooting for him and if he had lost because of his misspelling…Well, to the block with Maria Sharapova!

      • Eric S says:

You mean the third DD? Idk. There were a lot of clues left. I think her bet wasn’t bad if she didn’t like the category.

        • Cece says:

Eric, my point was just poorly stated (as almost always). I meant that Erin’s $5000 bet wouldn’t have accomplished anything, even if she had been right and Scott wrong in FJ. Basically, just agreeing with you.

        • Eric S says:

          Lol. Sorry!
You are right, though. The wager failed on two fronts!

    • Adam says:

I don’t want to offend anyone, but as a tennis fan I got pretty worked up at the end of Double Jeopardy. Then, to start FJ with Scott getting docked out of sure win territory for the way he pronounced “Sharapova” which in my opinion, after replaying the DVR a few times in a row was a bit suspect of a ruling to dock him, but as sad as that was, Erin will go down in history for losing Jeopardy for misspelling the name of a University in a way that she could have been saying “Bring ’em young” University, which is as consistent with BYU’s mission than anything explicitly stated in their actual mission statement that I couldn’t be happier with the outcome of this episode. Scott still would have won and Erin lost $1000 because she couldn’t just make it easy for everyone and say “BYU”.
