Final Jeopardy: Pop Stars (6-25-15)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/25/2015), in the category “Pop Stars” was:

She won the 1984 Grammy for Best New Artist and in 2013 became the first solo woman to win a Tony Award for Best Score.

2x champ Matt Pressman has won $36,000 so far. His challengers in this third game are: Desta Kimmel, from Houston, TX; and Ed Cardoni, from Buffalo, NY.

Round 1: Ed found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Indoor & Outdoor Cats” under the $1,000 clue with only 2 clues left after it. He was in second place with $3,800, $3,000 less than Matt’s lead. He bet $3,000 but could only come up with tiger. That was WRONG.

As of 2013 there were said to be about 300 left of the Iberian this, which would also like to buy a vowel, Pat. show

With that the round ended and Matt finished in the lead with $6,800. Ed was second with $800 and Desta was last with $200.

Round 2: Ed found the first Daily Double in “The End of the Soviet Union” under the $1,200 clue. He was in third place with $2,000 now, $5,600 less than Matt’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

This mutual defense treaty between the USSR & other communist states was disbanded in 1991. show

Matt found the last Daily Double in “Etymology” under the $2,000 clue with “Hymn Book,” a whole category, left after it. It didn’t look like we were going to get to that. He was in the lead with a runaway $10,400, $6,200 more than Desta in second place. He bet $800 and thought it was prismatic. That was WRONG.

Something that produces a rainbow of colors is said to be this adjective, after the Greek word for rainbow. show

The round ended right there and Matt still had a runaway with $9,600. Desta was next with $4,200 and Ed was in third place with $3,200.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS CYNDI LAUPER?

Cyndi Lauper’s award-winning career began at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards with her Best New Artist win. As David Schnelwar said in his article on GoldDerby.com: “[In 2013], Lauper won Best Original Score [for ‘Kinky Boots’] at the Tony Awards, bringing herself one award closer to accomplishing an EGOT. In addition to her 1984 Grammy, she won an Emmy for Best Comedy Guest Actress for ‘Mad About You’ in 1995. Now with her Tony award win, she is in need of an Oscar to complete the awards quartet.”

You might remember that “Kinky Boots” got quite a bit of attention on May 25th when Choyon gave it as a wrong answer to an FJ about Hymns.

Ed wrote down and crossed out Alicia Keys (2001’s Best New Artist), but he didn’t have time to write anyone else. He lost his $3,000 bet and finished with $200.

Desta thought it was Bette Midler (1973). She lost $4,000 and also finished with $200.

Matt got it right. He bet $1,100 so he won this match with $10,700. His 3-day total is $46,700.

FJ Results: 6-25-15

During the chat, Matt talked about his experience as a coach for slow pitch softball. He landed in the emergency room with a dislocated pinky finger that he jokingly referred to as a “gruesome injury.”

John Updike wrote “Rabbit, Run” partly in reaction to this more carefree novel that was published 3 years earlier. show

Is Matt pressman’s mother a physician in Massachusetts?

Just watched the game. Loved that Persian cat photo. Wasn’t thrilled that the entire category “hymns” went untouched. Can’t figure out what slowed the pace.

Alicia Keys for fj? Was she even born yet in 1984? Bette Midler wasn’t a bad guess. She and Cyndi are about the same age.

Yep, I remember Choyon and Kinky Boots. 🙂

Congrats to Matt. He has a very good memory.

Yes, Alicia was about 3 then and he obviously realized she was too young.

Congrats to you on your prediction — 3 days in a row. Woo hoo!

Oops. Forgot again. Thanks. I get so caught up in the games I forget. So Alicia Keys was 3 y/o. She would have had some serious pipes to win a grammy in 1984. LOL

Ikr? Tomorrow put me down for whatever the trifecta kid predicts! Good luck on the superfecta! (Yes, pedantic horse-racing fan: I know it’s a pick three/four)

@Eric, forget horses. Did you see Nike’s EPS? The consensus estimate was .83 EPS but it reported .98 EPS. It’s stock price will soar tomorrow. Surprised it was so underestimated when athletics is at an all-time high.

          Btw, thanks.

        • Eric S says:

Wow. Basically 20% higher than expected for a company that large? That is surprising.

wasn’t cyndi lauper in the go-go’s?
