Final Jeopardy: World Leaders in the News (6-24-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (6/24/2015), in the category “World Leaders in the News” was:

In 2014, CNN declared Zambia’s Guy Scott the first white president in sub-Saharan Africa since this man in 1994.

New champ Matt Pressman won $13,800 yesterday. Today he is up against these two players: Pat Devane, originally from Wheaton, IL; and Shayna Kravetz, from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Round 1: Shayna found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Get Up & Dance!” under the $600 clue. She was in the lead with $4,000, twice as much as Matt and Pat who were tied in second place. She bet $1,500 and she was RIGHT.

Swing dances include the Lindy Hop and this frenetic one whose name means “a nervous person”. show

Shayna finished in the lead with $6,700. Matt was second with $4,600 and Pat was last with $3,800.

Round 2: Matt found the first Daily Double in “It’s Hyphenated” under the $1,200 clue, the third pick of the round. He was in second place with $5,400 now, $!,300 less than Shayna’s lead. He bet $3,000 and could only come up with Middle English. That was WRONG.

It’s a synonym for Old English, spoken before about 1150. show

Shayna got the last Daily Double, the very last clue of the round, in “Moving Forward in Science” under the $2,000 clue. In second place with $14,700, she was $500 behind Matt’s lead. She bet $4,000 and she was RIGHT.

This verb can mean “to cause to happen” or “to fall from the sky” the way snow does. show

When Shayna got this DD, Pat had $10,600 but before the clue was read, he was dinged for $2,400 for saying Assbury instead of Ashbury to this clue:

In San Francisco ($1200) – The 1960s home of the Grateful Dead was 710 this street, near the intersection with Haight.

Shayna finished in the lead with $18,700. Matt was next with $15,200 and Pat was in third place with $8,200.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS F.W. DE KLERK?

“Zambia’s Guy Scott makes history as white president in sub-Saharan Africa” was the headline of CNN’s article on 10/29/14: “When Guy Scott takes the reins in Zambia, he’ll become the first white African President in sub-Saharan Africa since apartheid. Scott became vice president three years ago. His boss, President Michael Sata, died Tuesday while undergoing treatment for an unknown illness in London.” The article later states that “South African President Frederik de Klerk was the continent’s last white President.”

Scott was Zambia’s acting President until Edgar Lungu won the January 2015 election.

Pat bet $8,199. He finished with $16,399.

Matt bet $7,000, bringing him up to $22,200.

Shayna bet $3,498 so she finished with $22,198 and Matt won his second game by $2.00. What an ending! That was some lucky break for Matt — his 2-day total is $36,000.

FJ Results: 6-24-15

During the chat, Matt talked about attending a playoff game at Yankee Stadium between the NY Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, wearing a Red Sox shirt and hat. In the late innings, he was returning to his seat when he realized that some folks were chanting: “Kill that guy” and pointing at him.

2 years ago:: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “Transportation”

Susan B. Anthony said this new fad had “done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world”. show

I watched Keith.I think Shayna thought the category hard, maybe a triple stumper, anticipated Matt staying flat and gave up her advantage of being able to top any bet by Matt, betting very conservative. Although Matt made a good bet,he was also very lucky.

  2. Ed says:

I had thought that Matt didn`t want to go below Pat if he had stayed flat, but then what was Shayna thinking;why would she believe Matt would stay flat in final jeopardy?

    • VJ says:

I don’t have a clue what their rationales were, but Keith Williams has an in-depth analysis of the bets on The Final Wager. He gave Matt’s bet a big thumbs up.

      • Eric S says:

I will readily admit that Keith knows more about the new rules against betting for a tie than I, but I believe Matt should have bet one less (6999), thus doing all he could to win on a triple-stump, and cover the double-up by Pat if they were the only two correct. I believe Shayna got her math crossed and subtracted a dollar from her wager instead of adding.
Admittedly, the math can be tricky for the leader to try to win on a triple-stump.

        • VJ says:

If it was me in Matt’s shoes, I just would have bet it all. I mean if I was already going home with more than $13K, it wouldn’t matter to me at all if I was wrong and Pat got the extra thousand. Just my opinion.

  3. Ed says:

Can someone explain the rationale behind Matt`s final bet of $7000 and Shayna`s $3498?

  4. Cece says:

Well played game by all 3 contestants. And a triple solve! Too bad Shayna handed the victory to Matt on a platter.

    Congrats, Matt!

  5. jacob ska says:

Thanks vj. Surprised the variations in spelling his name were acceptable.

Kept trying to figure out why Pat got penalized on Ashbury. Now I know. I didn’t notice that in his pronunciation. Business Tech category was my favorite. Need more of those.

Congrats Matt. Love your daily facial expressions!

    • TR says:

While the judges are occasionally generous (Jeauniu for Juneau), generally speaking as long as it doesnt change the pronunciation, it’ll fly. So ‘Clerq’ and ‘Clerk’ both work.

    • VJ says:

I did notice it when he said it and re-watched it with the closed captions on. That said Asbury but we know that’s pronounced Azzbury and he definitely said Assbury.

I didn’t see anything that would affect the pronunciation with the two misspellings —

      Matt – De Clerq
      Shayna – De Clerk

    • Eric S says:

J: nice parley of one long -shot to another!

  6. Erica says:

Shayna will go to therapy for the rest of her life.

  7. VJ says:

Congrats on another correct prediction, Jacob. You’re on a roll!

OMG! That little grimace Matt made after the Tiny Tim DD yesterday pales in comparison to his reaction to winning today. LOL!!!
