Final Jeopardy: 16th Century Names (6-13-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/13/2017) in the category “16th Century Names” was:

In his 1557 almanac this French doctor predicted, “Immortal I shall be in life, and in death even more so”

2x champ Tucker Dunn has now won $27,600, after a misreading of the final clue didn’t cost him the game. His opponents today are these two fellas: Dylan Watton, from Rockaway Beach, NY; and Stan Jastrzebski, from Lafayette, IN.

Round 1 Categories: The National Women’s Hall of Fame – Big Ten Schools – “J” Words – Jobs Taken by Automatons – Around the World – A Beatles Song & Movie Title

Stan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “‘J’ Words” under the $1,000 clue, 2 picks after the chat. He was in the lead with $4,000, $2,600 more than Tucker in second place. He bet $1,000 and when he couldn’t figure it out, laughingly said jet. That was WRONG.

Round 2 Categories: Sailing Stories – Last Word in the Acronym, Please – Working Blue – Other Greek Letter Males? – The Thrill of Victory – The Agony of Da Feet

Dylan found the first Daily Double in “The Thrill of Victory” under the $800 clue on the 8th pick. He was still in third place but had $2,400 at this point, $5,600 behind Tucker’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Stan found the last Daily Double in “Agony of Da Feet” under the $1,600 clue, with 8 clues left after it. In third place with $4,600, he had $8,000 less than Tucker’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and took a guess with lupus. That was WRONG.

Tucker finished in the lead with $12,600. Dylan was next with $6,400 and Stan was in third place with $5,200.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS NOSTRADAMUS?

Michel de Nostradamus was a French physician, or at least called himself one (some sources say he never completed his medical degree) and an astrologer. He is famous for his prophecies “written as four-lined rhymed verses (quatrains) in vague, often cryptic language.”

An image of the cover page of Nostradamus’ 1557 almanac is on C.U.R.A. (Centre Universitaire de Recherche en Astrologie) or, in English, The International Astrology Research Center. There you can see the Latin subtitle: “Immortalis ero viuus, moriénsque, magisque / Post mortem nomen viuet in orbe meum.” They have more info about it in English.

Stan was 3 centuries off with Louis Pasteur. He bet nothing so he stayed at $5,200.

Dylan went with René Descartes from the 17th century. He bet and lost it all.

Tucker also had Pasteur. He lost his $201 bet and won the match with the remaining $12,399. That gave him a 3-day total of $39,999.

At least, no one thought it was Quasimodo

I was kind of hoping that somebody would get Final Jeopardy! right today, just because nobody got it right yesterday.

Although this game was not preempted in my area, I couldn;t care less about the Jeff Sessions interview it annoys me that my regular programming gets cut off with that annoying stuff. Anyway, I think Tucker’s play style is like Seth wilson. Also since Nostradamus was a doctor, what would have his specialty been since he got into the medicine field despite not finishing his degree, VJ?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I don’t think anyone knows if Nostradamus got a degree or not for sure. Some sources that like him say he did and skeptical ones say there’s no proof he went back and finished his degree after getting booted out of medical school because he had worked as an apothecary and doctors frowned on that profession. Whatever, he was particularly known for helping plague victims. This source that likes him says “he cured more plague victims then any other doctor.”

Man, I don’t know what blew me away more in FJ — that no one got it or the Louis Pasteur responses!

Super surprised that no one got the FJ.

Knew of Nostradamus. Didn’t know he was French, didn’t know he was a doctor. If I’d been listing possibilities, he would have been about 90th on my list, if he appeared at all.
