Final Jeopardy: Famous Books (5-9-14)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/9/2014), in the category “Famous Books” was:

It was published March 26, 1830. A very popular work with the same name premiered March 24, 2011.

It’s the final match of the Battle of the Decades Quarter-Finals and the last 3 players with a chance to get in the semi-finals are: Chuck Forrest (80s), Mark Dawson (90s), and Colby Burnett (00s). As usual, you can click on their names to see the preliminary match they won.

Round 1: Mark found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “South American Wildlife” under the $800 clue. Having just lost $600, he was in third place with $600, $1,400 less than Chuck’s lead. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Chuck finished in the lead with $6,800. Mark was second with $4,200 and Colby was last with $200, after a bad guess in “That ’70s Show”.

Round 2: Colby found the first Daily Double in “Female World Leaders” under the $1,600 clue, on his second pick. He was still in third place but he now had $2,200 after beginning with the $2,000 clue in the same category. Chuck had a $4,600 lead over him. Colby made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Colby found the last Daily Double in “The Stars Write” under the $800 clue. In second place with $7,200, he was now $3,600 behind Chuck’s lead. Feeling a bit gunshy now, he only bet $1,000 and guessed “The World”. That was WRONG.

Chuck finished in the lead with $14,400. Colby was next with $11,800 and Mark was in third place with $10,600.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE BOOK OF MORMON”?

“The first copies of the Book of Mormon appeared on the shelves of E. B. Grandin’s bookstore in Palmyra, New York, USA, on March 26, 1830. The initial printing totaled 5,000 copies. Over the next 150 years, more than 39 million copies were printed.” (Church of LDS)

“The Book of Mormon,” a religious satire musical with book, lyrics and music by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone, premiered on Broadway at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on March 24, 2011 where, according to playbillvault.com, there have been 1,299 performances as of May 4, 2014 and the Tony Award winning show is still running.

Mark wrote down “Moby Dick” (pub. 1851), and crossed it out. He didn’t have time to come up with anything else, so he lost his $2,000 bet and finished with $8,600.

Colby thought it was “The Time Machine” (pub. 1895). That only cost him $800 and he finished with $11,000.

Chuck didn’t have a clue. He lost $2,500, ending up with $11,900. That gave him the last semi-final spot. Way to go!

Colby has always been quite the tenacious player and it would have been a surprise if he didn’t get a Wild Card spot, but he did. His $11,000 score knocked Rachael Schwartz (at $7,600) off the Wild Card list. See all the winners and wild cards on the Battle of the Decades Results. Chuck Forrest is the only 80s quarter-finalist to make the semi-finals. Brad Rutter is the only one from the 90s. The other 3, Ken Jennings, Roger Craig and Russ Schumacher are from the 00s.

2 from the 80s as wc, one each for the 90s and 00s.
so a total of nine, overall 3 players representing the 80s, 2 the 90s and 4 the 00s.good mix and the 80s are doing pretty well!

Folks are expecting Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter and Roger Craig to each play in a different game in the semi-finals next week.

      • john blahuta says:

makes sense. ON PAPER. all it takes is one dd in a category where somebody is absolutely unbeatable and s/he has a lot of money and bets it all. or one slip of the tongue or one block at fj…the possibilities are endless. like the kentucky derby or the preakness the favorite hardly ever wins.

        • john blahuta says:

what i mean is that – even if they are seeded that way does not mean they automatically win. would be a hoot, if the only lady left wins the whole thing!

      • eric steele says:

Are they going by a seeded format? So Ken J would play Colby and maybe Pam or the highest wildcard?

        • eric steele says:

Sorry. Found the answer on the webpage under matchup stats. It seems like after the top three seeds were separated, the rest was random.

so dan’s 10.200 would not have been enough after all…..tough fj, compared to others from this week….
