Final Jeopardy: Mascots (5-7-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (5/7/2015), in the category “Mascots” was:

For the first time in almost 100 years, this pro team has an official mascot, a bear named Clark.

3x champ Scott Ylinen is now up to $62,705 in winnings from his string of runaways. Today his competition comes from these two players: Andrew Haringer, from Squamish, BC, Canada; and Emily Bialowas, from Ardsley, NY

Round 1: Scott found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Med Schools” under the $1,000 clue, the 5th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $1,600, $1,200 more than Emily in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was U.S.C. That was WRONG.

Emily finished in the lead with $5,200. Scott and Andrew were tied in second place with $2,800 each.

Round 2: Andrew found the first Daily Double in “‘PH’ Test” under the $1,200 clue. He was in second place with $4,800, $6,800 less than Scott’s lead. He bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT.

Andrew found the last Daily Double in “Rwanda” under the $1,600 clue. In second place with $11,600, he was now only $2,000 behind Scott’s lead. He bet $2,000 and thought it was The Netherlands. That was WRONG.

Scott finished in the lead with $13,600. Andrew was next with $11,200 and Emily was in third place with $5,200.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO ARE THE CHICAGO CUBS?

The Chicago Cubs introduced their new mascot, Clark, in January 2014. According to this ABC News article, the cub bear is “named after the Clark and Addison intersection where Wrigley is located…” and “The Cubs say Clark’s great-grandfather Joa was the franchise’s original live Bears mascot in 1916.” According to Clark’s official bio, his uniform number is 1, he was born in August and likes to vacation in Mesa, Arizona.

Emily picked the Chicago Bears. She lost her $4,900 bet and finished with $300.

Andrew was going for the Portland Trailblazers but only got “Portland T” down. He only bet $2,401 so he finished with $8,799.

Scott thought it was the Bruins. He lost his $8,801 bet and finished in second place with $4,799, and that makes Andrew Haringer the new Jeopardy! champ.

Imo this was a ho-hum game. Several triple stumpers. Was surprised Andrew got Marlene Dietrich in The Blue Angel 1930. Even Trebek sounded surprised. Shows some young people do watch the old b/w movies. Just on that alone congrats Andrew for winning the game!

On the fj clue Scott wrote down the Bruins. Trebek said “I assume the Boston Bruins.” Not so fast Alex, he may have meant UCLA Bruins which is college sports. But Scott to his credit cleverly kept his mouth shut as if to say “Whatever you say Alex.” 🙂 🙂 He could have confused the clue but we will never know. LOL

yeah, wow, the ups and downs with Andrew in that last round were something.

I noticed that too, that Scott kept mum about the Bruins LOL!

I did NOT this one coming…!
And Scott DID pick the Bruins, as Eric S
suggested .Smart wager by Andrew though, Seems he was not too comfortable with the category and was hoping Scott would not get it. The risk paid off, so congratulations Andrew for your smart bet and to Eric S for including the Bruins!
But no solves…? America’s favorite pastime…Not for Scott and Emily it seems.Andrew gets a free pass as being from Canada, and yet ironically HE was the one with the smart wager.
A FJ involving OUR favorite pastime sport won by a canadian player. Kind of ironic, even though Andrew did not know the answer but wagered just right. Win by default with a perfect bet, but a win is a win.
That Andrew would miss it was why I predicted 2. but a complete blank? Amazing.

You know as Jacob mentioned about the NYY, not every baseball team has a mascot. Actually, other than the SD chicken and the PhillyFanactic, I can’t think of any others, although they might well be there. Generally, if I’m thinking mascots, I’m thinking college (used for many sports), so the prep time, before the clue, may have actually been a hindrance.
idk: maybe I’m too busy watching the game.

      • Eric S says:

Ok. Maybe looking for cheerleaders also.

      • Marilyn Ahrenhoerster says:

Milwaukee Brewers have Bernie Brewer! (My favorite team is pitiful this year.)

        • Eric S says:

And the Nationals have the Presidents Race.

        • doris s. says:

What am I supposed to say? Red Sox started strong and now…
And the NYY? Sabathia has 6 starts, 5 losses and 1 no decision. Probably still gets a paycheck like a 5-0 pitcher….but at least the Yankees lead by 2 games and the Red Sox are dead last in the AL East, 4 games behind.but there are still over 130 games to play.So as fans of last place teams say”it’s still early…” (:(:

Cubs fans say (at least used to): ” wait ’til next year”: usually in June.
