Final Jeopardy: Supreme Court Decisions (5-7-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (5/7/2014), in the category “Supreme Court Decisions” was:

On Dec. 20, 1956 the court’s ruling on Browder v. Gayle went into effect, bringing an end to this 381-day event.

The three players in the 3rd game of the Battle of the Decades quarter-finals are: Mark Lowenthal (80s); Brad Rutter (90s); and Dan Pawson (00s). Click on their names to see the game they won to get in this one.

Round 1: Brad found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Farming” under the $600 clue. With two clues left on the board after this, he was in the lead with $4,800, $1,400 more than Dan in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE MONTGOMERY BUS BOYCOTT?

“Sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks on 1 December 1955, the Montgomery bus boycott was a 13-month mass protest that ended with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public buses is unconstitutional. The Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) coordinated the boycott, and its president, Martin Luther King, Jr., became a prominent civil rights leader as international attention focused on Montgomery. The bus boycott demonstrated the potential for nonviolent mass protest to successfully challenge racial segregation and served as an example for other southern campaigns that followed.” (Stanford Univ.)

Mark thought it was the Ford Plant Strike. He lost his $1,500 bet and finished with $300.

Dan just had a strike. He lost $9,801 and finished with $399.

Brad also had a strike but he didn’t bet anything. He remained at $32,400 and remains undefeated (by a human, that is!)

Were you surprised that Dan made such a big wager when he could have held on to his money for a wild card spot? There are 2 more days to go and so there are four more players who can beat Mark and Dan for those spots. Leszek Pawlowicz ($15,000) and Pam Mueller ($14,798) are still the Top 2.

    Q. “Were you surprised that Dan made such a big wager when he could have held on to his money for a wild card spot?”

Not really, considering that the 10,000 point range (I always consider the Jeopardy totals to be points rather than dollars) is –roughly– in no-man’s land for a wild card spot. Why wager, say, 2,000 if being wrong likely rules you out anyway?

Dan was in the proverbial “Go big, or stay home” conundrum.

he had already a $ 3.800 lead. i believe he felt very comfy in that category and in the ones remaining. (after the successful dd he went on a tear).he must have figured somehow as well that he could make up a lot of ground in the remaining game, should he be wrong. but he was right and as i said: a gutsy move paid off. one must not forget the psychological impact on the other player when their opponent makes a huge wager and is right. so brad kind of paralyzed them for a while. but congratulations to brad!

in the first part i am talking of course about brad’s dd wager. dan’s fj wager seemed like a desperation move, but we will see if his 10.200 would have been enough for a wc. would be ironic if it had….

I think Dan’s chances of getting knocked out of the wild card running today (Thurs) are as good as Ken Jennings winning his match.

I can’t wait to see what the DD bets will be like if Brad and Roger Craig are in the 2-day finals!

Well in fairness in that IBM Challenge Ken did finish second over Brad. So in that case, Brad was beaten by a human, no?

i sure as heck was surprised. gutsy move and it paid off.
