Final Jeopardy: Communication (5-31-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/31/2017) in the category “Communication” was:

Shigetaka Kurita designed the original set of 176 of these, which included the zodiac glyphs, hearts & a pair of googly eyes.

New champ Kerry Benn won $14,000 yesterday. It’s her second game (and the last game of the month) and she is up against these two players: Joe Nguyen, from New York, NY; and Lisette Pringle, from Little River, S.C.

Round 1 Categories: Camel Lot – Heteronyms – Sources of Power – Presidential Biographies – Moviemaking – Why I Drink

Joe found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Presidential Biographies” under the $600 clue, with 8 clues left after it. He was in the lead with $3,000, $1,000 more than Kerry in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was Tricky Dick. That was WRONG.

Joe finished in the lead with $3,000. Kerry was second with $2,000 and Lisette was last with $1,600.

Round 2 Categories: Japanese Geography – Also a Classic TV Title – Some Fashion Cents – Quoth the Poet – Going Down in History – Between Five & Four

Joe found the first Daily Double in “Quoth the Poet” under the $1,200 clue, with 11 clues left after it. He was in second place with $7,800 at this point, $600 behind Lisette’s lead. He bet $2,200 and took a guess with Dickinson. That was WRONG.

“Before I built a wall I’d ask to know what I was walling in or walling out” show

Kerry found the last Daily Double in “Going Down in History” under the $1,600 clue, with only 3 clues to go after it. In third place with $8,000, she had $2,000 less than Lisette’s lead. She bet $2,000 and a part of her response made the whole thing WRONG.

In 1858 British & American ships laid the first of these, as much as 2 miles down. show

Lisette finished in the lead with $11,600. Joe was next with $9,200 and Kerry was in third place with $6,000.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE EMOJI?

“In 1999 the Japanese telecom NTT DOCOMO released the original 176 emoji (e meaning “picture” and moji “character”) for mobile phones and pagers. Designed on a simple 12 × 12 pixel grid by Shigetaka Kurita, emoji enhanced the visual interface for DOCOMO’s devices and facilitated the rise of the nascent practice of text messaging and mobile email. Drawing on varied sources including manga, Zapf dingbats, and commonly used emoticons…. Kurita’s emoji planted the seeds for the explosion of a new visual language.” (MOMA: The Original Emoji)

Kerry bet $5,800. That brought her up to $11,800.

Joe bet $3,000 bet, finishing with $12,200.

Lisette bet $401 so she finished with $12,001, but Alex assumed she won. That went like this: Your wager… $401. Guess what? You’re gonna win. No!! You’re not!! You’re not! Joe Nguyen, you’re gonna win.” So Joe is the new Jeopardy champ. What a wild ending!

Final Jeopardy (5/31/2017) Kerry Benn, Lisette Pringle, Joe Nguyen

REVERSAL: Right before the chat, Joe got dinged for $1,600 on the $800 clue in HETERONYMS: “A book for a beginning reader & a treatment layer applied before painting.” First he only gave “primer” in the painting sense. Realizing the reader was pronounced differently, he went with “preemer,” later rejected by the judges. They wanted to hear “primmer.” That dropped his score to $2,000 and put him in a tie for the lead with Kerry.

A triple stumper from each round:

PRESIDENTIAL BIOGRAPHIES ($800) “The River of Doubt” tells of his darkest journey

ALSO A CLASSIC TV TITLE ($1600) Franklin beat him in the 1936 presidential election

I missed a few clues in the DJ! round because my TV froze for a minute.

Strange wagering by Joe and Lisette!

It seems like they are betting that they won’t know the final. That’s got to hurt when it turns out to be as easy as today’s. But what happened with Lisette today had to hurt even worse!

I missed the final jeopardy due to the weather alert. It was preempted. Hate when that happens. Congrats to all the players getting the triple solve on emojis. You use emojis a lot on your phone right, VJ?

    • VJ says:

Yes, it’s very frustrating when they suddenly break in on the show but esp right when FJ is coming on. I don’t use a lot of emojis, Lou. I kinda stick to emoticons 😉
