Final Jeopardy: The Pulitzer Prizes (5-15-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/15/2017) in the category “The Pulitzer Prizes” was:

In 1947 a journalist from the Wash. Post became the last to win a Pulitzer for Natl. Reporting by this means.

The Semi-Finals of the 2017 Teachers Tournament begin today. Gail Ansheles (QF #1), Sara Holub (QF #2), and David Clemmons (QF #3) are the first three teachers up to the plate.

The semi-finals are exciting! There are no more second chances and the players who get eliminated get $10K. The winners go on to play for the biggest prizes: 3rd place – $25K, 2nd – $50K and the grand prize of $100K.

Round 1 Categories: Lessen Plan – Goals – Concepts – Materials – “E”valuation – Summery

Sara found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Concepts” under the $1,000 clue. Only the “Summery” category was still left on the board after it. She had a big lead with $6,000, $4,600 more than David in second place. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Sara finished in the lead with $8,000. Gail was second with $1,800 and David was last, $400 in the red.

Round 2 Categories: 1917: 100 Years Ago – Broadway Musicals by Songs – Election Glossary – World Geography – In The Bookstore – After Burner

David found the first Daily Double in “1917” under the $1,600 clue, with 8 clues left after it. Just 4 clues before this, he only had $400. Now he was in third place with $6,000, $7,200 less than Sara’s lead. Alex Trebek said it was a chance for him “to make a bold move.” He did just that with a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

David found the last Daily Double in “World Geography” under the $1,600 clue. Only 5 clues were left after it. In the lead with $15,200 now, he had $2,000 more than Sara in second place. He bet $2,000 and took a guess with Montserrat. That was WRONG.

David finished in the lead with $17,600. Sara was next with $13,200 and Gail was in third place with $12,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE TELEGRAPH or TELEGRAM?

Telegraphic reporting was a short-lived journalism category. Pulitzer Prizes were awarded in it both nationally and internationally from 1942 through 1947. See all winners on Pulitzer.org

Also, check out Poynter.org’s trivia page on the topic. You’ll learn that telegraphic reporting wasn’t the shortest-lived journalism category, among other interesting items.

Gail thought it was the radio. She bet and lost it all.

Sara got it right. Her $12,000 bet brought her up to $25,200.

David was shaking his head like he thought his ship was sunk at that point. He wrote down telegraph and crossed it out for telegram! “That is an acceptable response,” Alex Trebek said, “so if you risked more than $7,600…” David bet $10,000 and won the first finalist spot. Wow! What a finish!

Way to go David! Job well done on your win. I wonder if the telegraph was one of Alexander Graham Bell’s invention. Interesting final though. david was struggling in the first round but came out strong on top in the end.

Gollee! That was incredible how he went from $400 to $17,600 in the last half of Double Jeopardy! It would have been heartbreaking if his final FJ response was not acceptable!

Wow! I thought one of the ladies was going to take that win.

      • Richard Corliss says:

As always every 2 day final game teachers tournament games will have boys but they’ll always be $100,000 winners. This isn’t normal. It’s getting ridiculous over and over.

      • Richard Corliss says:

Me too, Dalton. Now this tournament is never gonna have three ladies in every two game final of the Teachers Tournament.

    • Richard Corliss says:

You mean -$400 to $17,600. What I’m really saying is “As always EVERY Semi-finalist (who’s not a wild card) will win $100,000. For example Charles Temple, Patrick Quinn, Colby Burnett, John Pearson, Jennifer Giles, and Jason Sterlacci were semi-finalists they didn’t get into the wild cards spots and easily won $100,000.

      • VJ says:

Okay, Richard, about the semi-finalists but I did not mean from negative $400 to $17,600 for David. That’s why I said in the last half of DJ. He had $1,600 when he buzzed in on the $1200 clue in Broadway Musicals (18th clue of DJ). He gave a wrong answer, went down to $400 and from that point, he went on to finish the round with $17,600. So that $17,200 rise came about in the last 12 clues.

  4. Richard Corliss says:

    Darn you, David!!!

I wonder if in the next 2 days the winners will be women
