Final Jeopardy: Music Makers (4-8-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/8/2014), in the category “Music Makers” was:

Salisbury Cathedral’s Dean said this man, via his 2013 album, “is creating a huge awareness of” an historic document.

New champ, Michelle Leppert won $24,700 in yesterday’s game. Today she takes on these two players: Derrick Shivar, from Baltimore, MD; and Annalisa Srivatsan, from Carlsbad, CA.

Round 1: Annalisa found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “American History” under the $400 clue. She was in the hole for $800, Michelle had $800 and Derrick had the lead with twice that. She bet the $1,000 allowance and she was RIGHT.

Michelle finished in the lead with $5,400. Derrick was second with $5,000 and Annalisa was last with $1,400.

Round 2: Derrick found the first Daily Double in “Statues” under the $1,600 clue. He was in second place with $10,600, $1,600 less than Michelle’s lead. He bet $2,000 and left out one word so he was WRONG.

Derrick found the last Daily Double in “17th Century Thinkers” under the $2,000 clue. Still in second place, he again had $10,600, but that was now $2,000 less than Michelle’s lead. He again bet $2,000 but drew a blank so he was WRONG.

Michelle finished in the lead with $12,600. Derrick was next with $11,800 and Annalisa was in third place with $2,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS JAY-Z?

Rapper Jay-Z chose Salisbury Cathedral as the location for the global launch of his “Magna Carta… Holy Grail” album artwork in July 2013, where it was displayed next to Salisbury Cathedral’s copy of the 1215 Magna Carta. The document “inspired Jay-Z’s album with its famous words ‘To no one will we sell, to no one will we deny or delay, right or justice’.” Salisbury Cathedral is home to the best of the four surviving original copies of the Magna Carter and the Very Reverend June Osborne, Dean of Salisbury, was “delighted”:

“Jay Z, through his album, is creating a huge awareness of this historic document and its modern significance to a huge audience in the run up to [the Magna Carta’s] 800th anniversary in 2015….” (Salisbury Journal)

Annalisa couldn’t come up with anything. She lost everything but $1.00.

Derrick got it right. He bet $11,000 and finished with $22,800.

Michelle also drew a blank. She lost $12,000 and finished with $600.

So Derrick Shivar won the match and will be back with us tomorrow.

Brad proved he has strategy, he,bet only 2000 with 16k,lead. Had that been aKen and bet 6000, of which he missed , the other contestants had at least a shot.

People tell me I should try out for Jeopardy!, and I tell them the reason I don’t is because of Final Jeopardy clues like today’s.

I wouldn’t know Jay-Z if I tripped over him, and more importantly, I couldn’t care less about him. I forget more every five minutes than he ever knew.

I did really well with 17th Century Philosophers, though. I’m a genuine nerd, and proud of it.

And I TOLD you Michelle wouldn’t last long. I’m a Jeopardy! psychic. She was sending out “I won’t last long” vibes.

I’ve got the same vibes from Derrick, by the way. Anyone who can say “mermaid” but not come up with “little mermaid” won’t last long.

Michelle played well and had the lead for most of the game. She suffered the same fate Amy did yesterday.

Magna Carta in Jay-Z’s album is only one of the many well-known references made throughout Jay-Z’s album. The payoff is, I guess, well worth it. Publicity from Salisbury Cathedral, his album comes up if you type in Magna Carta on Amazon.

Association with well-known names, phrases — a trick used not only by rappers but bloggers (for search engine purposes). In the track called Holy Grail, for instance, Justin Timberlake raps: “You’re so unfair, sipping from your cup ’til it runneth over, Holy Grail”

Jay-Z throws in references to M.S. Hammer, Mike Tyson, Kurt Cobain and Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Then he has a track called Picasso, Baby that works in a whole bunch of art world references.

I wrote a post a while back griping about this practice with reviews of Boardwalk Empire and how bloggers threw in as many “you can’t be half a gangster” references as possible to get traffic. It was nuts!

Imo, whether in music or writing, the use of such gimmicks is due to lack of talent.

PS – Somebody just sent me an email saying the use of Magna Carta is really a play on Jay-Z’s real last name (Carter), and he was not inspired by the words from the Magna Carta!

I wonder if anybody ever told that to the Salisbury Journal or the Very Rev. June Osbourne after the fact.

      Bingo with a CAPITAL B!!

and to add to my opinion of rap: whenever i was forced to listen to it, it :
      1. had no melody
      2. the lyrics were vulgar, obscene or stupid
      3. the repetitive “rhythm” numbs the mind

Surprised no one got the Gary Busey one from two years ago, as he was moonlighting on Celebrity Apprentice at the time and his name was back in the public eye. Jay-Z, I don’t blame the two players, Michelle in particular, for missing it.

well, the buddy holly story came out 1978, so 2 years ago that was 34 years ago. you know how soon people forget, ESPECIALLY in the entertainment industry…..although busey’s performance brought him immense acclaim and prominence, the attention span of the public is short. if you are/were not a buddy holly fan and /or did not see the movie where busey portrayed holly i am really not THAT surprised. no pun intended, but fame is fikkle….
as for jay-z i agree with you wholeheartedly. i never cared about rap “art” and i am sure a LOT of people feel the same way. at least those who usually you’d expect to see on a show like j.

When Busey was on Celebrity Apprentice, they were making much more of his erratic behavior than his Best Actor nominated performance in The Buddy Holly Story. Meat Loaf was on that same season and said he was the most famous person on the show.
