Final Jeopardy: British Novels (4-7-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/7/2017) in the category “British Novels” was:

The title of this 1908 novel is an allusion to the hotel in Florence where the novel starts & ends the next year.

New champ David Gatewood won $21,600 yesterday. Today he is up against these two players: Pat Greiner, from Casper, WY; and Brad Shumel, from Chappaqua, NY.

Round 1 Categories: TV Title Partners – Similar Words – Lit Bits – Entertaining Occupations – Common Bonds – The Explorers Club

Brad found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Similar Words” under the $800 clue on the 19th pick of the round. He was in second place with $600, $3,600 less than Pat’s lead. He bet the $1,000 allowance and the first word he chose was WRONG. That’s what threw him off.

Any article of clothing & the birthstone of January. show

Pat finished in the lead with $4,400. David was second with $2,800 and Brad was last at zero.

Round 2 Categories: What’s Not to Lichen? – Historic Americans – 5-“H” – Lighthouses – -gates – Billboard’s All-Time Top Country Albums

Brad found the first Daily Double in “What’s Not to Lichen?” under the $1,600 clue on the 19th pick, just like in the first round. He was in third place with $7,200 this time, $2,000 behind David’s lead. He bet $2,000 and took a guess with hydrogen. That was WRONG.

Let’s take a test: once used to color beverages, this substance that determines acids & bases is extracted from lichens. show

Pat found the last Daily Double in “Lighthouses” under the $1,600 clue, the very last clue on the board. In second place with $10,800, she had $1,600 less than David’s lead. She bet $3,000 and guessed Roanoke. That was WRONG.

This N.C. cape’s lighthouse, the USA’s tallest at 200 feet, was used as a lookout tower for German subs in WWII. show

David finished in the lead with $12,400. Pat was next with $7,800 and Brad was in third place with $6,000.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “A ROOM WITH A VIEW”?

In the beginning of E.M. Forster’s 1908 novel, Lucy Honeychurch and her cousin, Charlotte Bartlett’s stay at the Pensione Bertolini in Florence, Italy is spoiled by the rooms they’ve been assigned because they do not have a view of the Arno. Another guest, Mr. Emerson, offers to change rooms with them. He and his son, George, have rooms overlooking the Arno. The novel ends in the same setting.

You can read a synopsis of the novel at Miss Darcy’s Library or read the entire novel at The Public Bookshelf

Brad didn’t have a response. He lost his $3,300 bet and had $2,700 left.

Pat got it right. She bet $7,000 bet, bringing her up to $14,800.

David came up with “Jamaica Inn” (a 1936 Daphne Du Maurier novel). That cost him $10,000 so he landed in third place with $2,400. So Pat Greiner is the new Jeopardy! champ and we’ll see her again on Monday.

Someone on Youtube posts their experience playing the first round J! 6 clues on Amazon Echo. THey post it every morning, before the show airs anywhere. One can get a glimpse of the first six categories of that day’s episode. J! 6 is an extra clue written for each category but never used on the air

I betcha David is kicking himself for shortening his own name on that last clue in TV title partners.

  3. Dalton Higbee says:

She should have gotten the Daily Double right so she would have been the leader in FJ!

  4. Dalton Higbee says:

Fridays still have the toughest FJ! clues this season, especially for the leaders.

There is a movie based on the novel starring Judi Dench, the same woman that was on pride and prejudice. Was Jamaica Inn also based on a movie as well (the response that david wrote?) VJ? From what I can see, this week has been a leader curse

    • VJ says:

Hi, Lou. Yes, there’s been a few film adaptations of Jamaica Inn. The first (1939) with Charles Laughton and Maureen O’Hara was directed by Alfred Hitchcock. There was a miniseries with Jane Seymour. I ought to see it sometime. She was in a miniseries of East of Eden and, seriously, I like that better than the James Dean movie.

I didn’t know about Jane Seymour and the Jamaica Inn miniseries, VJ, so glad you mentioned it. I just love her!

        • VJ says:

Me too, Rhonda, but actually, Jane plays Maureen O’Hara’s role ( I love her, too) in a 1983 TV movie (LINK)

It’s Jessica Brown Findlay in the BBC miniseries. Sorry ’bout the mix-up!

        • rhonda says:

That’s ok, VJ. Thanks so much for the link, I am going to watch this when I have a chance.
I love Jessica Brown Findlay, too, from Downton Abbey.

Sony who owns Jeopardy and WHeel of Fortune must be producing that Smurfs movie that’s coming out soon

43/61 here. A show with a Clue Crew category usually doesn’t see 61 clues played, but today’s did. THe fact that the second DD in DJ! wasn’t revealed until the last clue, and the fact that the CLue Crew category was played last(it was in round one), helped a bit.

    • VJ says:

I was indeed surprised (happily so) that we got to that last DD. Those clues in Explorers Club were long and 3 were triple stumpers!

I was also surprised by the dancing Smurfs at the end 😀
