Final Jeopardy: Astronomy (4-6-16)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/6/2016) in the category “Astronomy” was:

Its name means “fear”, & this moon orbits closest to a planet’s surface of any moon in the solar system.

New champ Jeff Crosby won $8,400 in his first game yesterday. In his second, his challengers are: Paul Belin, originally from Columbia, MD; and Sabrina Fritz, originally from St. Charles, MO.

Round 1 Categories: Welcome To – The Pepys Show – Sport Ability – We’ll Spot You a Letter – International Cuisine – The Best New Thing in the World

Sabrina found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Spot You a Letter” under the $600 clue on the 11th pick of the round. She was in the lead with $3,600, $2,400 more than Paul in second place. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

Third letter V: the conditional agreement made to humanity by God, as revealed in scripture.  show

Sabrina finished in the lead with $9,000. Paul was second with $2,400 and Jeff was last with $1,600.

Round 2 Categories: Fictional Hunchbacks – 3 Little Words – The Himalayas – “R” Hotel – The War of 1812 – Shared Initials

Jeff found the first Daily Double in “The War of 1812” under the $1,200 clue on the very 1st pick of the round. How do they do it?! Must be radar. The scores were the same as above. Jeff was $7,800 behind Sabrina’s lead. He bet the $2,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

In September 1814 Major George Armstead resisted an attack by the British Navy on this fort. show

Sabrina found the last Daily Double in “The Himalayas” under the $2,000 clue 11 clues later. She was in the lead with $11,800. There were some score adjustments for Paul and Jeff because of the confusing (and hard) “Shared Initials” category. (See below) After that, Sabrina had $11,800, $5,400 more than Jeff in second place. She bet $2,500 and took a guess with “Chai.” That was WRONG.

Tea is the main product of this city on the slopes of the Himalayas in West Bengal. show

Jeff finished in the lead with $14,000. Sabrina was next with $10,900 and Paul wasn’t far behind with $10,400.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS PHOBOS?

“Asaph Hall was about to give up his frustrating search for a Martian moon one August night in 1877, but his wife Angelina urged him on. He discovered Deimos the next night, and Phobos six nights after that…. Hall named the moons for the mythological sons of Ares, the Greek counterpart of the Roman god, Mars. Phobos means fear or panic (think “phobia”), and Deimos means flight (as in running away after an overwhelming defeat). Fitting names for the sons of a war god. Mars’ moons are among the smallest in the solar system. Phobos is a bit larger than Deimos, and orbits only 6,000 km (3,700 miles) above the Martian surface. No known moon orbits closer to its planet.” (Solar System-NASA.gov: Mars: Moons)

Paul bet $2,000 and finished with $12,400.

Sabrina’s $10,899 bet brought her up to $21,799.

Jeff bet $7,801 so he won his second match with $21,801. Great job! His 2-day total is $30,201.

Final jeopardy results for Wednesday, April 6, 2016

That Reversal: The $1200 clue in “Shared Initials” was the first clue chosen in that category and both Paul and Jeff gave wrong answers to “Bill Todman’s game show partner & a Perestroika pioneer.” Paul said “What is M-G” and Jeff said “Who is Goodman.” Opinions?

I too agree that the third contestant should have been credited for just giving the initials but the first one should not have been credited anything.

  2. SG says:

They should not have accepted “Sears Tower” in the answer that showed the picture of the WILLIS TOWER. It hasn’t been the Sears Tower since 2009.

    • Alfred Robert Hogan, M.A. says:

Respectfully disagree. I would accept either but the real name that will endure is Sears Tower. Like I will never use forced name of 40th POTUS to refer to Washington National Airport (George Washington is more than bad enough!), for another example. Egotist greedy capitalists who foisted another name on Chicago landmark should not be meekly rewarded with recognition! 🙂

  3. Flossie says:

Sabrina was the winner- there is no way Jeff should have been credited $1200. Bring her back.

Great to see another space and astronomy clue! Reassuring that it was a triple-get in Final Jeopardy.
Second day in row that Alex Trebek went to contestants for end credits. Is the explanation that champ of two days has some sort of disability–the pastor is only element in common other than host. Any insight or speculation please?

I agree with you. Love Astronomy.

I also noticed Alex going to the contestants at the end.

    • VJ says:

Jeff explained on JBoard that he has a back problem that prevents him from standing unassisted for very long. He was sitting down behind the podium.

46/56 here. Another oddity: After the Goodson/Gorbachev clue TS, the second clue of the DJ! round, Alex went to Sabrina instead of Jeff, even though Jeff had given the last correct response (the War of 1812 DD)

  6. Duck M says:

My opinion on that reversal is Jeff was just plain wrong. I can see how they might have thought the clue was asking for what the shared initials were but I can’t see how anyone thought one last name would work.

    • rhonda says:

I agree, only Paul’s answer of MG should have been accepted, not Jeff’s..

    • VJ says:

      I agree too. I mean three. 🙂

    • jared says:

I also agree. It would have been wrong even if they only wanted Mark Goodson’s name because Jeff said Goodman.

    • Flossie says:

      Agree!!!

      • rhonda says:

I guess their thinking was that Jeff wouldn’t have rung in if they had originally accepted MG, but I don’t agree with their thinking.

        • VJ says:

True, Rhonda, that is the reason. I remembered another game where two players gave answers that were ruled wrong, but only one got a reversal and I even managed to find it.

It was on September 18, 2014. The answer was Sorcerer’s Apprentice. The first guy said Faust, the second said Magician’s Apprentice and that was reversed, but not the Faust one because he rang in first with it.

Wow. Can’t wait to see this game. Should be exciting to watch.

@vj, thanks for the hard work you put into the recaps. They are superb.
