Final Jeopardy: U.S. History (4-29-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/29/2014), in the category “U.S. History” was:

Messrs. Gusenberg, Gusenberg, May, Weinshank, Clark, Heyer & Schwimmer famously died on this day in 1929.

Current champ Julia Collins has won $124,810 in 6 games. Today she will tie with Stephanie Jass for 7 wins if she can defeat these two players: Nick Lemek, from Omaha, NE; and Mary Twellman, from Bowling Green, MO.

Round 1: Mary found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Dam Lies” under the $400 clue. She was in second place with $200, $400 behind Julia and Nick, who were tied for the lead. She bet the $1,000 allowance and thought it was Iraq. That was WRONG.

Round 2: Mary found the first Daily Double in “Americana” under the $800 clue. This was the first pick of the round, so the scores were exactly the same as above. She bet the $2,000 allowance and, this time, she was RIGHT.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right much to our amazement, but we like gangster shows.

WHAT IS SAINT VALENTINE’S DAY or FEBRUARY 14TH?

On February 14, 1929, 6 men connected to the Bugs Moran gang met at a Chicago garage, waiting for the arrival of Moran himself. When Bugs Moran pulled up near the building, he spotted a police car. Thinking the place was about to be raided, he swiftly left. The “policemen” entered the building and lined the 6 men up against the wall, as well as a 7th — car mechanic, Johnny May. Any weapons the men had were removed and they were gunned down in cold blood. Frank Gusenberg was the only one to survive the gunfire but he refused to make any statement before he died. Current rumor has it that The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre will be included in the last season of the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire” later this year.

Nick wrote down July 4th. Al Davis, Oakland Raiders former coach, general manager and owner, was born on that day. He lost everything but $1.00.

Mary wrote down “Black Friday.” The black days of the 1929 stock market crash were Thursday, Monday and Tuesday. (see list of Black Fridays). She also lost everything but $1.00.

Julia wrote down October 8th “just to have a date.” It was the date in 1929 that the Chicago Cubs played their first World Series game in 11 years. She lost $5,000 so she won her 7th match with $20,100. Her 7-day total is $144,910. Very impressive and we continue to be impressed by her calm and cool demeanor.

She is on a roll, but I think the law of average is just a few categories away. Her competitors are lacking in the brains department.

Julia is on cruise control. Watching her reminds me of the expression “The Iceman Cometh.” Only in this case it is “The ice woman.” She might be on Jeopardy for a long, long time.

@keith, my bad, forgot about Stephanie.

Sorry for any other mistakes, people. the server was down 40 minutes and I am trying to get out of here to buy a chicken.

I think Stephanie Jass has won 7 games, so Julia is tied with her for most wins by a woman.
