Final Jeopardy: Historic Works’ First Lines (4-28-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/28/2017) in the category “Historic Works’ First Lines” was:

“The annual labour of every nation is the fund which originally supplies it with all the necessaries and conveniences of life.”

4x champ Alan Lin has racked up $84,400 so far this week. This season, Game 5 has been tough on players who made it this far. Let’s see how Alan makes out against today’s challengers: Kevin McCarthy, from Lincoln, RI; and Rachel Snyder, from Grand Rapids, MI.

Alan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Lit-pourri” under the $1,000 clue on the 14th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $4,400, $3,200 ahead of Kevin in second place. He bet $4,000 and tried “the slavemaster.” Alex asked for a name so he tried “Slavemaster Smith.” That was WRONG.

Rachel found the first Daily Double in “Annual Events” under the $1,200 clue on the 15th pick. She was in second place with $7,400 at this point, $2,800 less than Kevin’s lead. She bet $2,000 and said she could see them but couldn’t come up with the word so she got that WRONG.

Alan finished in the lead with a runaway $21,400. Rachel was next with $9,000 and Kevin was last with $7,800.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE WEALTH OF NATIONS”?

Adam Smith was a key figure in the Scottish Enlightenment Era. His 1776 work, “An Inquiry Into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations,” (commonly known as “The Wealth of Nations,”) “documented industrial development in Europe. While critics note that Smith didn’t invent many of the ideas that he wrote about, he was the first person to compile and publish them in a format designed to explain them to the average reader of the day. As a result, he is responsible for popularizing many of the ideas that underpin the school of thought that became known as classical economics.” (Investopedia)

Kevin got it right. He bet $1,201 and that brought him up to $9,001.

Rachel thought it was “Das Kapital.” She lost her $7,000 bet and was left with $2,000.

Alan also got it and added $3,000 to his runaway. That brought his win today up to $24,400 and gave him a 5-day total of $108,800. Kudos to Alan for going over the $100K mark on his 5th win. We bet it brought a smile to Dalton’s face to see the leader get FJ right on Friday.

Why won’t we see the leader getting Final right on Fridays?

    • VJ says:

idk, Dalton, you are the one who was so disappointed about the leader not getting FJ right for a long time

  2. jacob ska says:

Alan the 5x winner. Congratulations Alan.

A lot of knowledge for a 25-year-old. Smart, smart, smart!

  3. William Weyser says:

I’m happy that we finally have a 5-time champion for the 1st time in a long time. Up until Alan, we haven’t had a 5 or more time champion since Lisa Schlitt’s run from Late January to Early February, and now, Alan has finally broken that drought, as well as the 3-timer drought, and Alan, I wanted to thank you for your brains, and the courage and power of you to do this. Congratulations!

  4. Lou says:

I knew alan was going to win 5 games because it has been at least 5 or six weeks now after Rob Luguori won. I am hoping he will win game 6 next week and perhaps surpass Lisa Schlitt’s total. He is definitely having that playing style of Matt jackson and Seth Wilson. I am very happy. Furthermore, How will he fare against Andrew Pau in the toc, vj?

    • VJ says:

idk, Lou. The ToC is a whole ‘nother ballgame, as we know. I could be dead wrong, but I just don’t see Alan making it out of the quarter-finals. Seth and Andrew aren’t the only forces he’ll have to deal with– there’s Jason Sterlacci and Pranjal. Right now, my money’s on Jason and Seth making the semi-finals.

      • Richard Corliss says:

William, VJ, Lou, I know you’re complaining about the guys not making it to the tournament top 15 list, but you gotta calm down now. The people I know that are coming back are Sam, Andrew, Buzzy, Jason, Hunter, Pranjal, Seth, Tim, Lisa, Lilly, Alan and an upcoming teachers champion. P.S. Duck your head, there’s a pie coming at you!

        • William Weyser says:

I’m calming down right now, and I’m still looking forward to seeing all of those people, as is everybody else.

        • VJ says:

@Richard, do me a favor and don’t read things into comments that aren’t there. Lou and I weren’t “complaining” about anyone not making it to the top 15.

  5. VJ says:

Two of those Daily Double reminded me of musicals. Alan’s first one had me singing “Small House of Uncle Thomas” from “The King and I” and Rachel’s brought Judy Garland and Fred Astaire in “Easter Parade” to mind. — oh, I could write a sonnet, about your Easter _o__e_. (I’ll take an N, Pat! )

50/61 here. The DJ! board got cleared in large part because they saved the video category(Ohio newscasters reading clues about Ohio) for last. If that category had been in the first round, even if the first round was completed, DJ! would have not seen 30 clues
