Final Jeopardy: The Ancient Wonders (4-15-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/15/2014), in the category “The Ancient Wonders” was:

Far apart alphabetically, they’re the 2 deities in the names of the 7 Ancient Wonders.

4-day champ Sandie Baker has amassed $95,200 in winnings so far. Today she is up against these two players: J.D. Lape, from Corona, CA; and Jennie Crabbe, from Ballwin, MO.

Round 1: Sandie found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Medals & Decorations” under the $1,000 clue. She was in the lead with $5,000, $1,600 ahead of Jennie in second place. She bet $1,500 and she was RIGHT.

In 1964, Egypt instituted a special friendship medal for those who helped in the construction of this project. show

Sandie finished in the lead with $8,700. Jennie was second with $5,600 and J.D. was last with $1,600.

Round 2: Jennie found the first Daily Double in “True ‘North'” under the $2,000 clue. She was in second place with $8,400, $2,300 less than Sandie’s lead. She bet $3,000 and could only come up with “North America I don’t know”. That was WRONG.

This landmark took its place in American history on April 18, 1775. show

J.D. found the last Daily Double in “The Old West” under the $1,600 clue. In third place with $3,200, he had $16,300 less than Sandie’s lead. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

The Wild Bunch’s Harry Longabaugh took this nickname from the name of the town where he was imprisoned for horse theft. show

Sandie scored another runaway today with $21,100. Jennie was next with $9,400 and J.D. was in third place with $6,600.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO ARE ARTEMIS AND ZEUS?

The clue refers to the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the only two Ancient Wonders with names of Greek deities. The Museum of Unnatural Mystery explains how the ancient Greeks went about compiling their lists of wonders and says: “It is a surprise to most people to learn that not all the Seven Wonders existed at the same time. Even if you lived in ancient times you would have still needed a time machine to see all seven. While the Great Pyramid of Egypt was built centuries before the rest and is still around today (it is the only “wonder” still intact) most of the others only survived a few hundred years or less. The Colossus of Rhodes stood only a little more than half a century before an earthquake toppled it.”

J.D. wrote down “Zeus & Apollo.” He bet and lost it all.

Jennie had the same thing. She lost $3,805 and finished with $5,595.

Sandie had Apollo and crossed out Zoroaster in favor of Zeus. She lost $1,100 so she won the match with an even $20,000. Her 5-day total is $115,200. Awesome!

How embarrassing is it that the woman who said in her interview that she got her job as a copy editor because she’s a good speller — in probably the only time in her life when she’ll write something to be seen by millions on television — spells something wrong!? (She wrote “Appolo”.)

She’s from my hometown of St. Louis and she’s a copy editor for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. She wrote a big story which was in Sunday’s paper about her appearance on Jeopardy, and what goes on behind the scenes.

At the end of the article, she wrote, “After my weeks of hemming and hawing about wardrobe and wagering, I did manage to make one pretty bad goof. Alex didn’t get a chance to needle me for it, but I know my merciless colleagues at the Post-Dispatch will. I’ll just chalk it up to nerves. See if you can catch my flub on Tuesday’s show.”

Yeah, I caught it and I’ve needled.

And now I know why the Post has so many typos and spelling errors. I’ve been wondering!

LOL. I noticed her flub but forgot about her good speller brag in the chat.

I was really surprised none of them got FJ. My bet was Jennie would get it just because of her occupation — she must see the word in print more than the most.

I used to have a goldfish named Apollo. One of 4 – the others were Rocky, Adrian and Mr. T.

so sandie IS above the average level.the more she proves to know, the more funny it is that she wore those earrings yesterday……sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees i guess.-:)

I think Sandie is very impressive – makes her winnings in the games mostly, not getting big leads from DDs.

Check out the Hometown Howdies. Chrissy (who was also in yesterday’s game) is wearing peace sign earrings in her Howdy. What are the odds?

True. However, at the rate Sandie is going she will be up there for a long time. She is the most relaxed player I can recall. She slides in her responses displaying a cool and calm demeanor. Her sense of humor helps. When she gives an incorrect response she laughs it off and moves on. Is this a female Ken Jennings on the horizon?

she plays conservative and because she has such a broad base, she can afford to do so. a house is only as strong as its foundation/basis. and sandie has a VERY wide, solid and strong basis to build on.
